6. 6-litre (400cu in) V8,
Full matching numbers car,
Genuine 78, 844 miles,
Just 3 owners from new.
Hailing from the absolute heyday of the American muscle car, this Trans Am benefits from a monstrous 400cu in V8 and comes in a great specification with a fine history.
We're assured by the vendor that the car drives superbly, idling and cruising as it should, but also offering fine handling characteristics and braking straight and true. In all, they describe it as "a joy to drive".
Originally manufactured in 1970, it was comprehensively restored mechanically and cosmetically in 2019. Were told it only had 2 owners from new in the USA and it comes with copies of the original titles, build sheet and dealer order sheet. Also included are the original handbook and 'protector plate. There is an extensive photographic record of the restoration, which took place prior to import by the current owner in 2021. All of the import paperwork in included, as is the V5C in vendor's name and 3x sets of keys. The car was recently appraised by Robin Gray, president of Autopontiac, who also set-up and tuned the car. It has been professionally stored since import, and has just been serviced and tuned.
The vehicle was treated to a bare metal respray in original factory Polar White and new original style decals in 2019. It is still fitted with the original factory wheels, which are wrapped in Goodyear tyres. Presenting in superb condition, the exterior has been restored to factory specification in a full 'frame-off' rotisserie rebuild. The paint itself looks to be excellent, well finished and free from any evidence of damage or wear. The owner tells us there is a very small crease in the roof decal, just above the windscreen, but that this is barely noticeable. The engine bay has been beautifully detailed, and is near pristine in its presentation. Similarly, the underside of the car is in very fine fettle, finished in factory-correct Red Oxide complete with factory tags. As well as the original factory wheels, the vendor has two more sets of wheels, complete with tyres. They are a set of Rallye 2s with repro BF Goodrich tyres and a set of 'Year 1' 17 alloy Rallye 2s with new low profile tyres. We're told by the owner that they give the car an incredible and aggressive stance. They are available by separate negotiation.
With its light beige upholstery and complementary tan carpets, the 'Sandalwood' trim of this Trans Am certainly looks the business and is quite rare. Giving the cabin a light and airy feel, it's the perfect accompaniment to the knurled dash fascia and smart driving controls. During the restoration, the headlining and carpets were replaced with new items, while the door cards, seats and dash were retrimmed. Improved soundproofing was also installed at this point, to make the vehicle more comfortable when cruising. As much of the original interior was retained as possible, with new for old items being sources where necessary. Please note, the centre arm rest is currently a temporary black item but is being dyed to match the rest of the interior. The sports steering wheel is small and perfect for enjoying every atom of feedback from those wide front tyres. With the bank of controls and instruments all presented in excellent condition, it makes for a great driving environment. The original radio is installed, but currently not working, and the dashboard clock doesn't work. Otherwise, all of the features and controls in the cabin function just as they should. At the rear, the boot is generous and contains the original jack, a spacesaver spare wheel and an inflation cylinder. The door pins have also been replaced, to ensure the doors hang and operate perfectly.
In 2019, the drivetrain of this lovely Pontiac was significantly restored and improved. For starters, the 6. 6-litre (400cu in) V8 engine and TH400 automatic transmission were both completely stripped down and rebuilt, with a performance camshaft being fitted, alongside a B&M shift kit and new-old-stock shifter cable. This Trans Am also benefits from optional power steering, power brakes and a 12 bolt Safe-T-Track differential. Other enhancements that have been made include: new bushings and frame connectors, new washer pump, rebuilt carburetor, restored alternator and a full stainless steel exhaust system. The original distributor was also stripped down and a new electronic points system installed this keeps the looks of the original system while offering significantly more reliable performance.
