Description
1990 Supercharged MX5 NA
Here for sale is my mx5 that I’ve fully restored over the last 2 years. Purchased in May 2023 and used over that summer I then stripped it down to a bare shell and rebuilt it using only high quality parts along with some nice upgrades.
Now with mx5s rust is always a concern, my car was no exception to this with the sills suffering the most. That is why I have done extensive repair work by cutting out all rust and welding in new repair panels. Afterwards I treated the repairs with various buzzweld products (rust escapulator primer, seam sealer, chassis paint & war wax). All wheel arches have been stripped down to bare metal and protected with the same products.
Originally a 1. 6 short nose engine, it came apparent that it wasn’t in good health, low compression and burning oil. Using the flyin miata conversion kit I swapped in a healthy 1. 8 engine from a later car (on 110k miles). The original 1. 6 throttle body and coils have been retained. The cylinder head has been removed and rebuilt due to needing new valve stem seals, the valves have been cleaned up and lapped in as well. At some point in the engine’s life a crack developed where the lifting hook sits on the head, I have repaired this with metal epoxy to stop any leaks. ARP head studs and a high quality head gasket were used when reinstalling the head. A compression test showed acceptable numbers across all cylinders and a leak down test showed less than 5%. All seals on the engine have been replaced and the sump has been resealed. Every single coolant hose has been replaced along with a new thermostat.
I’ve put in a lot of work to get the car looking as good as possible, with having the rear half of the car professionally resprayed (sills, rear quarters, rear bumper & side skirts) and fitting various upgrades to the exterior and interior:
- OZ Racing wheels with Toyo proxi tyres
- MesiterR sportive coilovers
- CarbonMiata full carbon boot lid with spoiler
- OMP steering wheel with quick release
- Gcfab roll bar
- Mohair soft top
- Raybrig headlights
- Black grill
- Davefab radiator cooling panel
- Custom gauge panel for the centre console
- Rare side skirts (see below)
The side skirts are original Mazda side skirts from the 90s, part of the Finish Line body kit which was a dealer fit optional extra back when the mx5 first came out. Also used on the Le Mans edition mx5 which was produced to celebrate Mazda’s win at Le Mans and only 24 models were made. They are very rare and sought after and I was very lucky to come across them, I’ve declined numerous offers to sell them as I think they belong with the car now.
Onto the supercharger set up, making a healthy 199hp & 166ft. lbs on the dyno the way the car drives has been completely transformed. With the instant torque and smooth power delivery and of course the whine of the supercharger you won’t be disappointed by it! I’ve used brand new parts throughout and these are as follows:
- M45 supercharger teflon coated from a mini r53
- G19 engineering fitting kit
- Mini bypass valve
- Forge twin piston BOV (vent to atmosphere)
- Intercooler & silicon pipework
- IAT sensor & wire harness
- ME221 ecu
- Bofi Racing clutch
- Lightened flywheel with ARP bolts
- Bofi Racing EV14 injectors
- Ram air filter
- Mishimoto oil filter sandwich plate
- Oil Cooler
- Oil temp sensor & gauge
- Wideband sensor & gauge
- Uprated pcv valve
- NGK BK7RE spark plugs
- Sump baffle
- SkidNation coolant reroute
- Tegiwa radiator
The subframes and all suspension components have been blasted and powder coated with poly bushes fitted afterwards. New balljoints, track rod ends, drop links and wheel bearings have been installed. I upgraded to a torsen limited slip diff which I have resealed and put new seals in as well.
I’ve spent a lot of time and money getting the car to where it is now, it’ll be hard to find a car of similar quality. With it being a classic car they’ll obviously always be the odd problem to solve but these cars are easy to work on and maintain. Both mots in my ownership have passed with no advisories.
I’m sure whoever owns the car next will have just as much fun with it as I have.
Advertised at £8000 which I think is a reasonable price considering what’s been done to the car, I’ve been as honest as possible with the description and I’m more than happy to show anyone round it and go into more detail in person.
