This is definitely the case here, with this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C978798\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1973 Saab Sonett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was a car built mainly for the American market, though in reality, it was a little too odd even for them. As such, the Sonett has been consigned to the history books as one of those automotive curios that nobody really knows much about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C978798\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9941846.jpg\" alt=\"1973 Saab 97 Sonett\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this, the third-generation, is the most \u2013 and we use this term loosely \u2013 well-known Sonett, the reality is that it\u2019s been around since 1955. The first, and rather beautiful, Sonett was a two-seater open-top roadster with racing aspirations. It wasn\u2019t commercially available though, it was more a means for Saab to show what it could do. It was the second-generation car that became available to the public. It featured a box chassis with a fibreglass two-seater body dropped over it, a pointed front end, a Kammback rear end and round headlights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time the third-generation car \u2013 the one you\u2019re looking at here \u2013 became available, the Sonett had become an altogether more angular affair. Originally penned by Sergio Coggiola, the third Sonett wouldn\u2019t go on the existing frame, so trusted Saab man, Gunnar A. Sj\u00f6gren reworked the design so it would work, but without having to make expensive changes to the production process. Clever man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C978798\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-142 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9941852.jpg\" alt=\"Saab Sonett interior\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Powered by a Ford V4 engine and weighing only 880kg, the Sonett was a speedy machine. But just look at it, it looks like it\u2019s going 70moh when it\u2019s stood still. The car here is a perfect example, still fitted with the rare alloys and even the factory stereo, it\u2019s how Saab intended. The tan interior and maroon paint might not be to everyone\u2019s taste, but there\u2019s no denying it\u2019s a very \u2018of the time\u2019 combination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only consideration to make is that this car is in the Netherlands. That\u2019s no bad thing, it just means the drive home will be one hell of a test drive. But even if something should go wrong, you needn\u2019t worry.
