You may remember back in March we reviewed the Makita 227 piece tool kit<\/a>, giving it a sterling 4 out of 5 on the old Car & Classic-o-meter. Yes, that’s a legitimate scoring system. The thing is, there’s a bunch of us that make up this wonderful team, many of whom are classic car enthusiasts and many of whom like to tinker on said classic cars. That means that collectively there are a lot of tools floating about the place – there isn’t one giant Car & Classic tool kit that we all use like some kind of time-share villa on the Costa Del Sol. We all have our preferences but a good socket set is essential and so in today’s product review we’re looking at another such set: the Wiesemann 110 piece set <\/a>to be precise.<\/p>\n

The Product<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

German company Wiesseman has been producing quality tools since 1893 and this 110 piece set is no exception. The Wiesemann kit is much like the Makita in many respects. It’s even in the same price bracket coming in at a very reasonable \u00a385. It is a smaller collection though and is missing a decent set of spanners but that’s not to say it’s sub-par. Not at all. Made of chrome vanadium steel the kit includes soft handled ratchets, inserts, adaptors and extensions for 1\/2″ and 1\/4″ sizes from 10-32mm and 4-14mm respectively, as well as a screwdriver with myriad flat head, torx, PH, PZ and hexagon attachments, all clearly arranged with inscriptions in a sturdy transport case.<\/p>\n

The Test<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

We’ve been using the Wiesemann kit<\/a> for a good few years now after our previous set went up in Capri-shaped flames<\/a>. Utilised for all jobs big and small, from undoing interior trim pieces to head gasket and timing belt replacement, we’ve certainly put the tools through their paces. We’ve had breaker bars on the ratchet to undo stubborn wheel hubs and we once even had to get a mallet involved for some truly stubborn brake caliper bolts but it has never let us down. It may be a little bruised and battered and covered in grime but it’s still going great guns. With the exception of spanners (we have multiple sets anyway) the kit includes everything you could possibly require for classic car and bike fettling and aside from some vehicle specific specialist tools we’ve never felt the need to use anything else.<\/p>\n

The Result<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The proof is in the pudding, as they say and to stick with the baking analogies we’ve certainly made a lot of cakes with this set. Our Wiesemann tool kit gets A LOT of use. We are constantly breaking it out for any and all jobs and thanks to its fairly compact size and portable nature we even stow it in the boot when we head off on long journeys, safe in the knowledge that we’ll no doubt have what we need to get ourselves out of a jam should the worst happen. We’re not professional mechanics but at no point have we been stumped for a tool or felt the need for anything bigger or better, at least at the level we’re working at.<\/p>\n

The Verdict – 4 out of 5<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Wiesemann 110 piece socket set<\/a> is a great, well thought out bit of kit. We rate it. As mentioned, it’s constantly getting used and it just performs. Flawlessly. The fine-toothed reversible ratchets are smooth and it all feels incredibly well made. Although it does include a comprehensive collection of bits and pieces we do have to knock a point off for the lack of spanners, but if you’re anything like us you’ll have separate sets anyway. For the quality we’re not sure you can do much better at this price range.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
