Technology is brilliant, isn’t it? We live in an age that allows us to shout at things in our house and they turn on, or off. We can order shopping via our actual fridge, we can stream movies at a moment’s notice, we can light EVERYTHING with LEDs of all colours. We can also connect with people, via a phone or computer, all over the world. And we don’t even need to know those people. Instead, the only thing we need is a common interest. Say, oh, I don’t know, classic cars for example. Yes, that would be a good one.<\/p>\n

\"Toledo,<\/p>\n

Without technology, without my computer or my phone, this lifelong hobby of mine would be an insular, lonely affair. It would also, no doubt, be incredibly frustrating. Technology brings us so much, and the classic car landscape has never been in a better position because of it. We didn’t have this connectivity twenty years ago. We had to read a book, or heaven forbid, leave the house and talk to another human being. Ew. Who wants to do that? Now though, we can find little shining beacons of knowledge via the almighty Google, or social media, or the warming embrace of YouTube<\/a>. Questions are answered. Enthusiasm is topped up. Knowledge is kept brimming. What a time to be alive.<\/p>\n

I am not, for example, a mechanic. I never have been and I never will be. I’m simply not that bright. However, I have a garage full of tools and an undiluted desire to have a go myself. Were it not for the internet, or for my computer, I wouldn’t have known what I was doing most of the time. There would have been tears, frustration and possibly a bit of fire, too. But, by looking online, by finding groups of impassioned people, I have spent years arming myself with knowledge and ‘can do’ thoughts. Brilliant. I feel confident in my spannering these days. As such, I have bought more and more ambitious project cars, and immersed myself further and further into the classic car world.<\/p>\n

\"computer<\/p>\n

The trick, I have found, is to make the online and digital world work for you. It’s easy to get angry at social media, what with all the garbage on there. But if you seek out the car groups, if you engage and give (where you can) back to the community, you’ll be set. Take the bin fire that is Twitter in 2023. Constantly in the headlines because of the megalomaniacal humanoid shop mannequin that has just bought it. Going to be bad times, right? No, actually. The classic car love on there is strong, the enthusiasm is infectious and the feel good mojo overflows. You just have to seek it out.<\/p>\n

\"computer<\/p>\n

Then you have, and this is where I go heavy on the love for the very website you’re on now, the dedicated websites. Car & Classic is one. Yes, you can come here and buy a car, but we work hard to make sure you have information, articles like the very one you’re reading now, buying guides and event reports. Sites like ours and others like it are here to bring the classic car world closer together. You don’t need to go and seek out other people, or books or whatever. It’s all here for you, just a clickity click away. And that is a brilliant, brilliant thing. It keeps us, as enthusiasts motivated and engaged and happy. And in 2023, happiness has never been more important.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The global access to a computer, or phone, or tablet, or smart fridge also has massive positive implications for classic cars in the future. It makes this glorious, exciting, chrome-plated world accessible to the youth. It gives the next generation of enthusiasts a means to engage via a platform they have grown up with. For us, we have seen change, but for them, this is all they have known. So they strive to make it great in their own way. Sure, we might not get the lingo from time to time, but we get the enthusiasm. And we also get to interact with them in ways we probably never would. We are connected.<\/p>\n

\"Ford<\/p>\n

And on that connection note, don’t think that classic car life on a computer is insular. It’s not. It’s the opposite in fact. I have ‘met’ people online that I would go on to call great friends. Talking to other human beings in the real world is a stressful affair, it’s also a bit weird if you come on all ‘WILL YOU BE MY FRIEND?’ in the middle of a classic car show. But by ‘meeting’ people online first and then mixing that with the physical world, the ice is broken and true friendships can grow. And let’s face it, friendship is a massive part of classic car ownership. We all like sharing our passions, we like showing off our vehicles and we like talking to others who share in that interest. The computer is not the enemy of that, it’s the facilitator in many ways.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
