The Porsche 944 used to be, albeit somewhat unfairly, looked down upon. There was no actual reason for this as it was a good car, but for Porsche snobs the fact it wasn’t a 911 grated. It was the same for the 924. Unfair dismissal despite actually being quite good. Times have moved on though, and with the values of 911s rocketing into the stratosphere, the 944 became a good gateway into the classic Porsche world. But then, as more people bought them, more positive vibes for the car spread, and that’s why cars like this glorious 1989 Porsche 944<\/a> <\/em>can hold their own against the admittedly legendary 911.<\/p>\n

With a cheeky, characterful 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine producing 163bhp, mated to a slick five-speed transaxle all resting in a perfectly tuned chassis, the 944 was a riot to drive, keen to hug every corner and clip every apex with poise and determination. This one, being a 1989 Porsche 944<\/a><\/em>, is a 2.7 version, meaning more power and more torque. Never mind the 911, the 944 offers – some might suggest – even greater driving pleasure.<\/p>\n

This stunner, finished in Velvet Red Metallic with deliciously matching burgundy interior, has lived a cherished life. In recent years, it’s been subject to a \u00a310,000 ‘glass out’ respray, it’s got invoices with it totalling over \u00a322,000 in fact. It’s only covered a mere 80k miles over its life, and has been looked after – again in recent years – by PARR<\/a>, a leading classic Porsche specialist. In May of this year it had a brake fluid change, new water pump and a full set of belts. As such, this 1989 Porsche 944<\/em><\/a> is on the button and ready for whatever journey you choose to put in front of it.<\/p>\n

For us though, it’s the fact that this 944 is such an unapologetic celebration of the late ’80s. Red braces would have been well at home in this pop-up lighted legend. It’s brash and bold in hue, but still restrained and elegant thanks to that still stunning design. Honestly, who doesn’t love an ’80s coupe with a big ‘green house’ rear hatch and a staggered, mean stance? It’s still a car that captivates and excites, despite it’s rough, unloved start in life. Though by 1989 (the 944 was launched in 1981) the world was starting to see the appeal, and buyers were keener. Hence the glorious spec of this one do doubt.<\/p>\n

At a hair under \u00a322,000 this isn’t the cheapest Porsche 944 out there, but nor should it be. Fastidious previous owners, outstanding mechanical condition, and a spec to die for, this is one of the best around. And while it might not be a 911, it’s arguably more drivable, more fun and more unique.
