The image of the slightly panicked woman has a certain innocence about it. What Mini is saying is that one of its automatic models is simply a joy to drive. Then, just when you think it\u2019s swerved the chance of any offence it ends with, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes driving as effortless as sleeping. Sleeping, luv. You lie down, close your eyes and\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We wish we were making this up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Austin &#8211; \u2018Make the Pennies Count\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Austin, Austin A60, BMC\" width=\"950\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2.jpg 950w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-633x800.jpg 633w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-768x970.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-765x966.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have no idea where to start with this one. Mainly because we don\u2019t know what \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gay-blade-about-town<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is? Though the ad does go on to reference \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gay Dads<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Was the Austin A60 an LGBT pioneer? Possibly. Or perhaps it\u2019s actually an old phrase referring to a handsome swordsman. We\u2019re not making that up. The ad was also a bit sexist, suggesting that men don\u2019t shop, so to save the pennies, they should ask their wife. And then there\u2019s the line about it being worth more when you trade it in. Is talking about the car <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the one in the advert wise? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Renault &#8211; \u2018In Search of the Sun\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3.jpg\" alt=\"Renault, Renault 5, Le Car\" width=\"916\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3.jpg 916w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3-611x800.jpg 611w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3-768x1006.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3-765x1002.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve never looked at our car and contemplated how useful it would be as a sun lounger. Not once. Nobody has. Because this isn\u2019t what cars are meant for. Still, that didn\u2019t stop Renault from engaging in this weird mashup with Aquasun cream. The whole thing looks strange, but also deeply unsettling. A car should not be that close to a pool. They\u2019re putting a lot of faith in the handbrake. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Vauxhall &#8211; \u2018Viva Corners on Coils\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/4.jpg\" alt=\"Vauxhall, Vauxhall Viva, Viva\" width=\"943\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/4.jpg 943w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/4-629x800.jpg 629w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/4-768x977.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/4-765x973.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 943px) 100vw, 943px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The late \u201860s were a simpler time. Nowadays everyone is shouting about autonomous this and electric that. Back then, you could excite the head of marketing with something as simple as coil springs. When they brought rack-and-pinion steering into it, he must have passed out. It\u2019s all slightly ironic though, as the Viva wasn\u2019t nearly as sporty as the advert suggested, but bless them for trying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Triumph &#8211; \u2018Made for Swingers\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5.jpg\" alt=\"Triumph, Spitfire, Triumph Spitfire\" width=\"855\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5.jpg 855w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-570x800.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-768x1078.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-765x1074.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardon? Swingers? We\u2019re going to go out on a limb here and assume this American advert is referencing swingers as in the \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cool cat\/musical\/Sammy Davis Jnr<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 sense. Not the \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keys in a bowl on a Friday night in a Barratt housing estate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 sense. They both look happy for it to be that, anyway. But then they would, after all, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any swinger digs the Triumph Spitfire Mk2.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Gilbern &#8211; \u2018Weekend with a Friend\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-1552x2000.jpg\" alt=\"Gilbern, Gilbern Genie, Genie\" width=\"1552\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-1552x2000.jpg 1552w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-621x800.jpg 621w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-768x990.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-765x986.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-1020x1315.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6.jpg 1589w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1552px) 100vw, 1552px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you imagine seeing a broadsheet advert for a car you have to build yourself in today\u2019s papers? No, of course not. That would suggest the need for manual labour, and people tend to avoid that in 2019. In 1966, however, the notion of building your own car in a bid to save \u00a3470 was a strong advertising tool. Even if that meant the roads were filled with Gilberns of dubious quality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Vauxhall &#8211; \u2018Tradesman\u2019s Entrance\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7.jpg\" alt=\"Vauxhall, Vauxhall Chevette, Chevette\" width=\"886\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7.jpg 886w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-591x800.jpg 591w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-768x1040.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-765x1036.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\">Now, this might just be our filthy mind, but this advertising slogan sounds a little crude. You know, because \u2018tradesman\u2019s entrance\u2019 is slang for, well, you know. So to sell a car on that merit seems, at least by 2019 standards, a little odd. We get where Vauxhall was coming from though. The hatchback was a relatively new thing in the 70s, so why not shout about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Austin &#8211; \u2018More a Way of Life\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8.jpg\" alt=\"Maxi, Austin Maxi, Austin\" width=\"927\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8.jpg 927w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-618x800.jpg 618w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-765x990.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 927px) 100vw, 927px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s car adverts show the vehicles in sunny resorts, or hooning around tracks, or transporting annoyingly beautiful families to urban, modern destinations. In the \u201870s, there was little concern for \u2018lifestyle\u2019 influences. So instead we got a man in a white coat loading a washing machine into an Austin Maxi. How they sold any with such a depressing advert is beyond us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>Triumph &#8211; \u2018A Gentlemanly 1\u00bd Litre\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9.jpg\" alt=\"Triumph, Triumph Dolomite, Dolomite\" width=\"916\" height=\"1199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9.jpg 916w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9-611x800.jpg 611w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9-768x1005.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/9-765x1001.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 916px) 100vw, 916px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s visual proof of how things have moved on. Tell someone it takes your car 10 seconds to get to 60mph today, and they\u2019ll laugh. Back in the \u201870s, it was something to be proud of. Not only that, it was something you could advertise. These days the ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) takes a dim view on the promotion of speed, so it\u2019s seldom mentioned. It makes old adverts like Triumph\u2019s even more significant, really. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #036300;\"><strong>MG &#8211; \u2018Britain\u2019s Beauty Spots\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/10.jpg\" alt=\"MG, MG Midget, Midget\" width=\"912\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/10.jpg 912w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/10-608x800.jpg 608w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/10-768x1011.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/10-765x1007.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 912px) 100vw, 912px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s end things on creepy tone, with this crass slice of advertising gold from MG. Can you imagine a modern brand suggesting you go and ogle the fairer sex in one of their new cars? No, not at all. But way back when, it was perfectly acceptable. All it does now is makes Midget owners seem a bit\u2026 leery. And as we know, that\u2019s not the case.
