A car that takes the rule book and unceremoniously chucks it out of the window into oncoming traffic for it to be dashed against the slew of uniformity heading in the opposite direction and mangled under the wheels of accepted norms. Cars like the utterly bonkers six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 for instance. And because this is Car &amp; Classic, we have one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1748178\">for sale<\/a>, naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward&#8217;s &#8216;Fab 1&#8217; Rolls-Royce there haven&#8217;t been many six-wheeled cars, and even then the pink Thunderbirds whip was entirely fictitious. Wheels five and six weren&#8217;t simply bolted on as an afterthought or as a modification, far from it. The Tyrell P34 was very much intended to be this radical from the get go, but it wasn&#8217;t merely a concept car, publicity stunt or an engineering show piece. Oh no. The Tyrell P34 not only competed in motorsport, but it competed at the highest level. Yep, Formula 1, and it only went and bloody won too!<\/p>\n<p>Looking like something out of a fantasy Top Trumps deck the P34 was designed by Tyrrell&#8217;s chief designer Derek Gardner in the mid &#8217;70s. Gardner had joined the F1 constructor in 1970 at the behest of founder Ken Tyrrell and quickly proved himself by designing its very first chassis \u2013 the Tyrrell 001, in his garage of all places. Fast forward a few years, and after designing the next six cars for Ken and the team, Gardner (after initially conceiving the idea as far back as &#8217;68) would put pen to paper to produce what would become arguably the most iconic F1 car of all time. Period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1748178\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30446 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-2000x1334.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-1020x680.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/230813_CFS1081-1800x1200.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The idea behind the concept was to improve the drag co-efficient of Tyrrell&#8217;s latest batch of F1 cars by bringing the front wheels inside of the front wing, thereby reducing drag and providing a cleaner flow of air over and around the car, technically making it faster. The problem Gardner faced was the fact that to achieve this much more compact setup the front wheels would need to be tiny. 10 inches in diameter to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>It was certainly possible to fit such small wheels to the chassis but the smaller the wheel, the smaller the tyre&#8217;s contact patch with the track, and in Formula One grip is life. So how do you double the contact patch without increasing the size of the wheels? You add two more of course. Simple really when you think about it. The only way Gardner could solve this problem and still retain his original idea of smaller front wheels was to double up, and lo and behold, the Tyrrell P34 was born.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1748178\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30443 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1-800x473.webp\" alt=\"classic car, motoring, automotive, car and classic, carandclassic.co.uk, carandclassic.com, F1 car, Formula One car, Tyrrell, P34, Tyrrell P34, '70s car, retro, race car, racing car, V8, six wheeler, six-wheeled car, classic F1 car for sale, classic racing car for sale, Speedmaster, Cosworth, FIA, motorsport\" width=\"800\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1-800x473.webp 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1-768x454.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1-765x452.webp 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1-1020x603.webp 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1976-tyrrell-668557aa02db1.webp 1076w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The design, alongside the aerodynamic improvements, also led to increased braking performance due to there being an increased overall braking area but it wasn&#8217;t without its problems. The suspension system was naturally more complex, as was the steering setup, but the big brains at Tyrrell solved this by only connecting the front pair of wheels to the steering with the second pair then attached to the first via a trick crank.<\/p>\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3kOlb7JAI1Q\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Retaining the same Ford Cosworth DFV naturally aspirated V8 from previous Tyrrell F1 cars, the P34 hit the ground sprinting and proved to be incredibly competitive, with its best result being a first and second finish at the Swedish Grand Prix in &#8217;76 at the hands of Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler. The pudding was well and truly proved and rival teams had begun experimenting with six-wheeled racers as a result.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1748178\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30449 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade-1020x680.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/07\/1977TyrrellP34intheparade.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, after some redesigns for the following &#8217;77 season, the P34 was unable to replicate the success it had enjoyed a year prior and by the time the &#8217;78 season rolled around Tyrrell was back to fielding conventional four-wheeled cars, essentially closing the book on the P34. The car&#8217;s incredible legacy lives on though and what Tyrrell and Gardner achieved with the P34 is nothing short of remarkable. The Tyrrell P34 remains the only six-wheeled car to ever win an F1 race, a record that will undoubtedly never be matched and the design has gone down in history for all the right reasons.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s that lasting legacy coupled with the car&#8217;s truly iconic status that prompted American racer Jonathan Holtzman to try and buy one of the five remaining survivors. Unfortunately he came up empty handed but being a rather tenacious fellow he didn&#8217;t simply give up. It&#8217;s a fascinating story and well worth the read so head on over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1748178\">the advert<\/a> and dive in. There&#8217;s far too much to go through here but suffice to say it was an absolute mission, and one that has paid dividends when it comes to the end product. Oh my.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, cars like this don&#8217;t get made any more, or even thought up, such is the lay of the automotive land nowadays, so take advantage of a time when imagination and inventiveness were still encouraged and innovation was celebrated.
