They&#8217;re really expensive don&#8217;t you know! But, I have at least driven two out of the three (that elusive Countach remains a slippery so and so) and whomever it was that said \u201cnever meet your heroes\u201d was talking absolute gibberish. First came the 930 Turbo (which incidentally almost killed me, very much reinforcing its stereotype) and then the Testarossa; \u00a3120K worth (at the time) of 1985 Monospecchio goodness. And it was glorious.<\/p>\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6hy4JPyGvno\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Transcending mere nuts and bolts and becoming a cultural icon of the &#8217;80s thanks to its numerous appearances in various media at the time (we&#8217;re looking at you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6hy4JPyGvno\">Miami Vice<\/a>. And you Outrun, sitting at the back there!), the Testarossa remains one of the most famous Fezzas to ever turn a wheel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/list\/20\/testarossa\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31795 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Outrun-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Outrun-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Outrun-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Outrun-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Outrun.jpg 977w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Breaking cover at the Paris Motor Show in 1984, the Pininfarina-designed Testarossa (with a team led by Leonardo Fioravanti) was the successor to the 512 Berlinetta Boxer and would remain in production for seven years before being superseded by the 512TR, which was really just a revised version of the Testarossa, let&#8217;s be honest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/list\/20\/testarossa\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31796 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-2000x1334.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-1020x680.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/DSCN4694-1800x1200.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fitted with Ferrari&#8217;s naturally aspirated 4.9-litre flat-12 engine that was stashed behind the cabin and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, the Testarossa produced 385bhp and 362lb ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate to 60mph from standstill in around five-and-a-half seconds, and on to a top speed of 180mph. Not only to comply with certain country&#8217;s regulations concerning the size of openings on cars but also to provide much needed cooling to the engine via the twin side-mounted radiators, a decision that was made in order to keep temperatures down in the cabin. It was also a decision that helped establish the Testarossa as poster boy for a generation.<\/p>\n<p>So, to mark the occasion of the dashing red head turning 40 years old this month we thought we&#8217;d take a look at some of the models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/list\/20\/testarossa\/\">currently available<\/a> here on Car &amp; Classic, of which there are almost 40 at the time of writing!<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #036300;\">Most expensive<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Testarossa may not be as exclusive as say, a 250 GTO, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s still not a highly sought after Prancing Horse and prices for good examples can easily crest \u00a3200K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1786735\">This 1986 example<\/a> is the most expensive on site at \u20ac217,500 but there&#8217;s good reason for that. Not only is it an early Monospecchio (single mirror) but it is also a Monodado, meaning it has the original single nut 16.33\u201d magnesium wheels before they were changed to a five bolt pattern in &#8217;89.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1786735\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1986-ferrari-testarossa-66fd1e3811ded.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari, Testarossa, Ferrari Testarossa, Monospecchio, Monodado, flat-12, Italian car, supercar, sports car, motoring, automotive, classic car, retro car, car and classic, iconic car, carandclassic.co.uk, carandclassic.com, modern classic, classic Ferrari, classic Ferrari for sale, Ferrari Testarossa for sale, birthday, anniversary, Testarossa at 40, 40 years of Testarossa, Maranello, Pininfarina\" width=\"632\" height=\"422\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The car is also Ferrari Classiche certified, confirming its matching numbers and high level of originality. Cherished throughout its life and serviced and maintained exclusively by Ferrari dealers this is a very tidy example indeed.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #036300;\">Cheapest<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the Monospecchio above, which is the most expensive on site, we thought we&#8217;d include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1597439\">this later 1990 model<\/a>, which is the cheapest at just under \u00a390K, to give you an idea of pricing scales when it comes to choosing a Testarossa. Presented in classic Rosso Corsa over Crema leather interior, all of which is unmarked, it&#8217;s quintessential Ferrari and is arguably one of the finest Testarossa&#8217;s currently available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1756705\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31805 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1991-ferrari-testarossa-66a02da1a7be9.jpg\" alt=\"Ferrari, Testarossa, Ferrari Testarossa, Monospecchio, Monodado, flat-12, Italian car, supercar, sports car, motoring, automotive, classic car, retro car, car and classic, iconic car, carandclassic.co.uk, carandclassic.com, modern classic, classic Ferrari, classic Ferrari for sale, Ferrari Testarossa for sale, birthday, anniversary, Testarossa at 40, 40 years of Testarossa, Maranello, Pininfarina\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has an incredible service history portfolio from new and benefits from the highly coveted Ferrari Classiche certification. Factory fresh, the last service was completed recently, which included a full cam belt change. It&#8217;s right-hand drive too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1756705\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-31806 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1991-ferrari-testarossa-66a02da1a4b26.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #036300;\">Earliest<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/car\/C1756764\">This 1984 Monospecchio<\/a> is the oldest on site, having left the Ferrari factory in Maranello way back in 1984, the year production of the Testarossa began. But that doesn&#8217;t mean this stallion is ready to be put out to pasture.
