Manual gearboxes are obsolete. They\u2019re an anachronism, a relic of a bygone age. Manuals require more effort from the driver, are easier to damage than modern autos and are often slower. This, no doubt, goes some way to explaining why carmakers have largely abandoned the three-pedal setup, a move that, on the face of it, makes total sense. To non-car people, the story ends there.<\/p>\n<p>But they\u2019re totally missing the point.<\/p>\n<p>While we can\u2019t always explain exactly why, we petrolheads know that a manual gearbox unlocks the key to driving nirvana, offering a connection with the car and the road that no automatic system, no matter how fast or intelligent, can ever come close to replicating. Don\u2019t get me wrong, there are some terrible manuals out there, and myriad cars that are far better suited to an auto box. A Ferrari, however, is not one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Maranello knows a thing or two about making great manuals. Their signature feature is the gated shifter, an exposed metal plate with precisely machined slots to ensure crisp, precise gear changes. These manuals are a joy to use; with the selection of each gear somehow a more deliberate action than a regular system. A well-engineered gated manual should feel as smooth and positive as the action of a rifle bolt. All great Ferraris had them. To find one in the UK is practically unheard of, until now\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/auctions\/2007-ferrari-599-gtb-manual-conversion-gNbwZg#comments-and-bids\">This<\/a> rather lovely UK market right-hand drive Grigio Silverstone 599 GTB began life with Ferrari\u2019s electronically-controlled seven-speed F1 SuperFast gearbox &#8211; a technological tour de force in its day that delivered lightning-fast upshifts and generally did a very good job of making the 599 a fabulous grand tourer. The downshifts, on the other hand, were jerky and ill-timed; the 599 felt especially cumbersome around town, which rather undermined its supposed status as the \u2018usable Ferrari\u2019. But little did Chris know that his very car would later go on to gain the gearbox it always should have had; the manual Ferrari originally intended to fit before they decided to promote their new F1 system. If he\u2019d owned it as a manual, we dare say he may well have kept it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the seller of this, Chris Harris\u2019s actual 599 GTB, enters the picture. James&#8217;s company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madetobedriven.co.uk\/\">Made To Be Driven<\/a>, has made it their mission to \u201c<em>provide a purist driving experience that enhances engagement and control of the machine. For us, that means a manual gearbox wherever possible or practical, along with additional enthusiast-focused modifications that increase the various pleasures of driving!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;In a world where manufacturers and governments seem determined to stifle the joy of driving with various driving aids and assists, we strive to unlock the full potential of vehicles already on the road through modification and improvement at every turn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;By no means is that simply chasing maximum power and torque, with overly aggressive setups that are really only suited to the track, but rather ultimate usability and driveability on your favourite B road and beyond.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that\u2019s a mission statement we can get behind.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the car.<\/p>\n<p>Chris\u2019s 599 GTB now features a seamlessly integrated six-speed gated manual transmission, the fitment of which required substantial re-engineering of the car. The seller tells me:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>For Chris\u2019s old 599, that means a linear throttle pedal, fuel mapping improvements, increasing torque availability, lowering the front nose, tweaks to camber and toe, all the way down to small touches such as programming the exhaust valves to open earlier, ensuring that V12 orchestra can really sing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAlongside this, we\u2019ve been developing a rod linkage in the same style as the factory, but also incorporating an isolator with paddles designed to decrease deflection of the rod, thus improving the original design.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original Bosche ECUs have been extensively rebuilt, utilising cutting-edge AI technology to combine the best of the factory software updates ever released for the GTB and HGTE, whilst allowing for crisp heel-toe downshifts. Certainly, it needs to be driven to be fully appreciated.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boasting full service history from Ferrari main dealers and independent marque specialists, this 599 GTB is a superb example, irrespective of its brush with motoring royalty and the brilliant manual conversion by Made To Be Driven.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke with James, the seller and one of the team behind Made To Be Driven, to learn more about why this promising young company chose the 599 GTB as their first Ferrari conversion.<\/p>\n<p>Having participated in numerous track days and a few races over the years, James developed a keen interest in vehicle modification, noting that the scene was far more widespread across the pond in the United States than it had been in the UK, where there tended to be greater resistance. James tells me he would endeavour to fit a manual gearbox to any driver-focused car whenever possible and practical, specifically targeting vehicles he felt could unlock their full potential via a three-pedal conversion. That\u2019s a testament to the work of Made To Be Driven, a firm still in its infancy. I asked James what the future held.<\/p>\n<p>599s are the main focus for the time being, James tells me, while Made To Be Driven will also provide service, maintenance, and exhaust upgrades on a bespoke basis. James adds that lots of vehicles that could potentially be advanced significantly through these kinds of conversions, marketing to enthusiasts who are increasingly bereft of the features they actually want from OEMs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>As well as the 599s, we\u2019ve manual swapped an E60 M5 and have various projects on the go currently &#8211; such as a stroker engine rebuild for an E92 M3, a 964 restomod with a full engine rebuild, and a Ford Escort Series I RS Turbo engine rebuild, to name but a few.
