To the uninitiated, it probably sounds rather unappealing. Get up at some ungodly hour on a Sunday morning, drive to a car park, wonder about a bit, and go home. There\u2019s no structure, no programme, no obligation; just cars, coffee and conversation. <\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly the point. The fact that Cars and Coffee is a simple, informal, unstructured affair means that meets are easy to organise and can be held regularly. With the exception of some dedicated venues<\/a>, meets are not typically ticketed and are usually free to attend, so you don\u2019t have to decide in advance whether you\u2019re going to go or not. Attendance at a Cars and Coffee event can be a spur-of-the-moment decision. If it\u2019s pouring with rain, you might give it a miss. Or if your weekend plans have changed at the last minute, you might find you can go after all. That\u2019s what makes them great. <\/p>\n

Best of all, you never know what is going to show up. Some Cars and Coffee events have a theme and might be centred around a marque of vehicular movement like JDM, classic Americana, air-cooled Volkswagens or off-roaders. But there are also more general meets where anything and everything could come along, from pre-war specials to 2000s hot hatchbacks. Owners of European exotics and sports cars gathered separately from the US-made vehicles typically found at American car events. <\/p>\n

Crystal Cove and events like it soon became very popular, with enthusiasts favouring the casual vibe over the high-pressure environment of traditional, judged concours events. The calibre of car was no less impressive than you\u2019d find at Pebble Beach or Amelia Island, without officials in blazers and Panama hats coming over to see if you\u2019ve polished your intake manifold incorrectly or fitted the wrong valve caps.<\/p>\n

Crystal Cove Cars and Coffee was shut down in 2006. It became a victim of its own success, with locals complaining about the excessive noise and traffic jams. But its legacy lives on, having spawned a Cars and Coffee culture that continues to thrive worldwide.<\/p>\n

The knock-on effect is that it\u2019s a great way to start your day. A little time spent among like-minded enthusiasts can provide a significant mental health boost, which can put you in the right frame of mind in which to go about your day.<\/p>\n

An informal atmosphere is essential. A successful Cars and Coffee should champion a “come as you are” inclusivity. A love of cars can be a great social leveller. It doesn\u2019t matter whether you drive a Maserati or a Montego. The more eclectic a meet is, the better.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t even need to own a car. Go along for the atmosphere, the chance to see some great cars and meet some great people.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the greatest thing to emerge from Cars and Coffee culture is the positive impact it is having on people\u2019s mental health. For those who feel isolated or unhappy, the welcoming atmosphere of these informal gatherings offers a welcome distraction from everyday life and the opportunity to talk. <\/p>\n

The mental health benefits of car meets<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the car community is increasingly diverse, and all the better for it, its demographic remains predominantly male, and we blokes are often the worst when it comes to talking about our mental health. Whereas many of us find talking about cars the easiest thing in the world, so it\u2019s a great talking point with which to get to know people, which may blossom into closer friendships or deeper conversations, which can genuinely have a life-changing impact on yourself and others around you. Talking about a car makes it easier to talk about life.<\/p>\n

Combating Social Isolation<\/strong><\/p>\n

The irony today is that the more we interconnect digitally, the less we seem to spend time with each other face-to-face. For so many of us, cars represent freedom; they enable us to go anywhere we want, whenever we want. That extends to broadening our own social circle, and Cars and Coffee events serve to remind us that we are not alone. The car meet is a vital “third space” for people to feel seen and heard. It should be noted that Cars and Coffee isn\u2019t a direct form of mental health counselling, but it can be a first step towards seeking the help you need, and a form of therapy in itself, even if it\u2019s just having a long chat about carburettors with someone you\u2019ve never met.<\/p>\n

Several key initiatives have arisen from Cars and Coffee culture, including UK-based clothing brand Takona<\/a>: a company dedicated to \u201cdriving mental health awareness\u201d through automotive-inspired design. Takona\u2019s motto is “It\u2019s Ok To Tlk”, a sentiment we can all get behind. Many Cars and Coffee meets also organise fundraising events for mental health charities, as well as other deserving causes. It\u2019s wonderful to see the ways in which our community can come together and do something good, all while having fun in the process.<\/p>\n

    – The Vibe: A relative newcomer that has quickly become a staple. It\u2019s a dedicated car and bike cafe with a huge outdoor space for static meets.<\/p>\n

    – The Vibe: Held at the famous Haynes Motor Museum on the first Sunday of every month. It\u2019s a classic, traditional breakfast club that has been running for years.<\/p>\n

    Cars and Coffee is a wonderful way for the automotive community to come together, supplementing the typical events calendar of shows with meets that are convenient, accessible and hugely enjoyable for all petrolheads. Whether you bring an interesting vehicle yourself or go along to appreciate the spectacle, showing up contributes to a healthier, more connected lifestyle.
