This is not a restomod. It may look like an old Mk1 Escort from the early ’70s, but when you dig into the details, this car couldn\u2019t be more different. The Ford Escort Mk1 RS by Boreham Motorworks is a brand-new car, an officially licensed Ford product with a continuation chassis number. It has a better power-to-weight ratio than a 911 GT3; it revs to 10,000 rpm, and it weighs just 895 kilos. <\/p>\n

Perhaps the only figure more impressive than these is the price. The Escort Mk1 RS costs \u00a3295,000 plus VAT. That\u2019s \u00a3350,000 all-in – before options. That\u2019s an awful lot of \u2018dosh\u2019 (Dagenham-speak) for an old Escort. But this isn\u2019t an old Escort, remember. <\/p>\n

What is the Ford Escort Mk1 RS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve established what the Ford Escort Mk1 RS is not. But what exactly is this car, and what is it for? <\/p>\n

Boreham Motorworks claims that the Escort Mk1 RS is \u201cthe ultimate B-road car\u201d. That\u2019s a bold assertion. If this were purely a trackday weapon, Boreham\u2019s job would be a whole lot easier. A track car needn\u2019t bother with the headache of vehicle type approval, nor does it need suspension that can cope with potholes, or an engine that handles bank holiday traffic. The Escort Mk1 RS will have air conditioning, leather upholstery, and – if you tick the box on the order form – Breitling stopwatches.<\/p>\n

With today\u2019s technology, merely building a fast car is not that impressive. But building a car that\u2019s truly great to drive on real roads, while navigating the myriad requirements a new car has to meet, is a much taller order. <\/p>\n

But Boreham Motorworks has already done a track car – and a bloomin\u2019 good one at that: The Alan Mann 68 Edition, another Ford-sanctioned continuation product, was an exact replica of the 1968 Group 5 Championship-winning Escort. The Escort Mk1 RS will be altogether different and far more radical.<\/p>\n

 <\/h3>\n

What’s under the bonnet?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

The BD10-330, or \u2018TEN-K\u2019, engine is Boreham Motorworks\u2019 flagship powerplant, a naturally aspirated dry-sump 2.1-litre unit producing 325 bhp thanks to a very trick Formula 1-inspired 16v cylinder head, breathing through a carbon fibre intake manifold and air box. <\/p>\n

The engine is an homage to Ford\u2019s legendary BD (Belt Drive) twin-cam, although it is entirely bespoke in its design, weighing in at just 85 kilograms and outputting 155 bhp per litre. The gearbox is a five-speed \u2018dog-leg\u2019 affair, stirred by a rally-style elongated gearstick designed to be snatched from the side, rather than the top.<\/p>\n

That clever little engine is mounted in a bespoke front subframe of Boreham Motorworks\u2019 design. Anyone who remembers the original Mk1 Escort will be accustomed to a set of practically medieval leaf springs and a cast-iron axle at the rear. But the Mk1 RS dispenses with this formula in favour of coil-sprung trailing arms with Watt\u2019s linkages and titanium axle tubes. The two-way adjustable dampers are from the same manufacturer that supplies Gordon Murray Automotive. Enough said. <\/p>\n

 <\/h3>\n

What’s it like inside?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

We know \u2018Restomod\u2019 is a dirty word in Escort Mk1 RS circles, but this car\u2019s interior does bring to mind the likes of Singer and Alfaholics. You can specify fancy features like special plinths for crash helmets behind the seats, and the Breitling timing equipment we mentioned earlier. <\/p>\n

What Boreham Motor Works has done is to take the feel of an original Escort interior and update it for the 21st century, with lashings of luxury thrown in. There are swathes of leather adorning just about every surface, while those few that aren\u2019t flaunt bare carbon fibre. <\/p>\n

The dashboard is a welcome departure from the modern world, with analogue instrumentation and physical buttons – not a touchscreen in sight. It has a DIN stereo. Remember those?<\/p>\n

What will it be like to drive?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

What the Escort Mk1 RS will be like to drive is anyone\u2019s guess at this stage, but with a CV as impressive as Boreham Motorworks and, more broadly, the DRVN Group, we can likely expect something very impressive indeed. <\/p>\n

Besides the Alan Mann 68 Edition, as part of the DRVN Group, Boreham Motorworks sits under the same umbrella as the team behind the lauded Evoluto 355 – a \u201cground-up re-engineering\u201d of the Ferrari F355. Boreham has also announced that there will be a mid-engined, four-wheel-drive RS200 inspired by the infamous Group B era of the WRC. <\/p>\n

This is clearly a team of do-ers, not just dreamers. <\/p>\n

While high-tech in its engineering, the Boreham Motorworks Ford Escort Mk1 RS promises to feel analogue behind the wheel. The controls themselves are minimalist and, by association, old-school. <\/p>\n

We understand that the finished car will have power steering, but this will be dialled out at driving speeds, much like the GMA T50. As we mentioned earlier, the engine is naturally aspirated and sonically tuned to utter that induction bark so beloved of old Ford BD twin-cams. With a 10,000 rpm redline, it\u2019s guaranteed to sound amazing. <\/p>\n

 <\/h3>\n

Who is the Ford Escort Mk1 RS for?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Just 150 examples of the Ford Escort Mk1 RS will be built. This number is at least in part governed by the nature of the type approval required to sneak the car past more stringent emissions regulations and other such bureaucracy. <\/p>\n

We know there is a customer for this genre of car. Boreham Motorworks may well be keen to point out that this is not a restomod<\/a>, but it certainly appeals to the people who buy restomods; people who love old cars, but want something only modern technology can offer. <\/p>\n

This begs the question of why this new car has been styled after a Mk1 Escort<\/a>. The design is iconic, certainly, but the Escort was hardly what you’d call exotic, so that makes the \u00a3350,000 price tag seem all the more lofty. There were hot versions of the Triumph Dolomite and Hillman Avenger, but you wouldn\u2019t expect to see a six-figure modern reinterpretation of them. <\/p>\n

The choice of a Mk1 Escort also means Boreham Motorworks has some competition, sparring with the likes of the 250 bhp MST Escort, costing under half as much, albeit the less extreme of the pair. Wouldn\u2019t it be wonderful if there were a sub-\u00a3100,000 version that hard-working mere mortals might be able to aspire to? Escort Mexicos and RS2000s of old were \u201cblue-collar sports cars\u201d after all. At \u00a3350,000 before options, this isn\u2019t. <\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Boreham Motorworks will find buyers for all its 150 Escort Mk1 RSs, we\u2019re in little doubt of that. It caters to a wealthy clientele increasingly disillusioned with the cars mainstream manufacturers are putting out today. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve all seen what Ferrari is up to with the Luce<\/a> and what Mercedes-Benz is doing with the controversial new AMG. Even though Ford has shrewdly backed this project, the \u2018Blue Oval\u2019 hasn’t got everything right in recent times, with the resurrection of the Capri nameplate for yet another homogenous electric crossover. <\/p>\n

If you do happen to be in the market to drop nearly half a million quid on a new sports car, then why not go for something limited production and bespoke? The Escort Mk1 RS will aim to recapture everything that made the original Mk1 Escort feel special, minus its age-related shortcomings, and enhance it with the very best of 21st-century engineering. A compelling package indeed.<\/p>\n

The Ultimate B-Road Car? It\u2019s looking like they could well be right.<\/p>\n
