Jaguar has no safe-playing SUV option to fall back on; it has no cars of any kind currently in production. The company has staked its fortunes on an EV-only grand tourer with more than 1,000PS, and the Jaguar Type 01 price starts at \u00a3120,000. That takes nerve.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first time Jaguar has reinvented itself. William Lyons started the company as a motorcycle sidecar manufacturer, then pivoted to building bespoke coachwork for Austin Sevens before morphing into SS Cars, a moniker it would soon have to shed for obvious reasons after the Second World War.<\/p>\n
Jaguar underwent further transformation in the 60s through a merger with BMC, later British Leyland, then Ford ownership from 1989, and later Indian Tata Motors control. That brings us to the present day. Following a frankly disastrous Jaguar rebrand that the company has (understandably) been quick to distance itself from, the Type 01 (pronounced “zero-one”) is Jaguar’s bold new entry into the GT market.<\/p>\n

Why a grand tourer for the Jaguar Type 01?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n <\/h3>\n
Deciding what sort of car Jaguar should stake its future on must have been extremely difficult. A company in dire straits should stick to what it knows best, but Jaguar has a big problem: the cars it is best at have no place in today’s market. Enthusiasts would be as pleased as punch if Jaguar started making XJ saloons with silky-smooth V12s, comfy leather seats, big ashtrays and a slab of walnut adorning the dashboard, but such a car simply isn’t viable in 2026. If only it were as easy as dusting off the old E-Type tooling and carrying on like it’s 1963\u2026<\/p>\n
The “easy” option would be to do what practically every other manufacturer seems to have done: launch an electric SUV or “crossover”. It’s what the people want, after all. Let them eat cake, and all that. But that’s not the Jaguar we know and love. We’re talking about a brand of mavericks, rule-breakers, lateral thinkers. A company that, back in the 1950s, borrowed disc brakes from aeroplanes to win Le Mans with the C-Type. Jaguar could have slapped its badge on a homogeneous SUV, manufactured cheaply in China, and called it a day. Instead, Jaguar is launching its most aerodynamic car ever, with a drag coefficient of 0.23, building it in Solihull and challenging the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley at their own game. Fair play.<\/p>\n

We sincerely hope it does save Jaguar; we really do. But it doesn’t matter how good your car is if nobody buys it, and it remains unclear exactly who the Type 01 is for. The ultra-luxury EV segment is currently slumping, with competitors like Bentley scaling back their electric-vehicle plans as buyer enthusiasm wanes. The fact that the Type 01 is a Jaguar EV with no petrol option is a major point of contention, and it was Jaguar’s own bold call to make.<\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nOur verdict: can the Jaguar Type 01 save Jaguar?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n <\/p>\n
On its own, no. No single \u00a3120,000 grand tourer can rescue a brand with no cars in production. But that’s the wrong test. The Type 01 doesn’t need to save Jaguar; it needs to prove Jaguar is worth saving.<\/p>\n
That’s a more achievable job. With 1,000PS+, a 0.23 drag coefficient and a \u00a3120,000 price tag, the Type 01 is a statement of intent and a showcase for the Jaguar Electric Architecture that any future models will depend on. If it’s a halo that gets people into showrooms, it will have done its work.<\/p>\n

Our verdict: can the Jaguar Type 01 save Jaguar?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n <\/p>\n
On its own, no. No single \u00a3120,000 grand tourer can rescue a brand with no cars in production. But that’s the wrong test. The Type 01 doesn’t need to save Jaguar; it needs to prove Jaguar is worth saving.<\/p>\n
That’s a more achievable job. With 1,000PS+, a 0.23 drag coefficient and a \u00a3120,000 price tag, the Type 01 is a statement of intent and a showcase for the Jaguar Electric Architecture that any future models will depend on. If it’s a halo that gets people into showrooms, it will have done its work.<\/p>\n
The real verdict won’t come from the comment sections, but from the order books when they open in early 2027. Until then, we’re cautiously optimistic, because Jaguar has proven people wrong before.<\/p>\n
