{"id":4087,"date":"2019-11-26T09:14:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T09:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/?p=4087"},"modified":"2024-09-12T10:22:20","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T09:22:20","slug":"1989-saab-900-turbo-classified-of-the-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/1989-saab-900-turbo-classified-of-the-week\/","title":{"rendered":"1989 Saab 900 Turbo &#8211; Classified of the Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many would argue that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/cat\/3\/89\/\">Saab<\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/cat\/3\/89\/99+turbo\/\">99 Turbo<\/a> of the 1970s, was the company that brought turbocharging to the masses, and we\u2019d be inclined to agree. This Swedish speed machine was like nothing else, not least because of the way it looked. The Saab 99 was not what you\u2019d call a pretty car, but nor was it ugly. Unique would be the best adjective to throw at it. But the looks didn\u2019t actually matter, not when it had that 2.0 fuel-injected, turbocharged, 145bhp engine under the bonnet. Get it over 3,000rpm and you were hit with a dollop of power like nothing else. It was exhilarating, exciting and like nothing else that the common man could buy. The 99, then, changed Saab\u2019s image. Longer and wider than the baby 99, the 900 was a car that the Swedes would use to bring the fight to Germany, and it worked. It still boasted those Saab qualities we had come to know and love, such as being built to be safe and of course, sporting a very unique look, but it was more than just a quirky offering. The 900 offered some real driver appeal, it was practical, and in might Turbo guise, it was a serious performer. The one to have was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1177587\">900 Turbo<\/a>, in black, with the three-spoke alloys. Which, happily, is what we\u2019re looking at here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 175bhp under that long bonnet, this old machine might be a proper classic, but don\u2019t think that limits it to sedate Sunday drives. This is a car that wants to be pushed and pushed hard, and when you do, you\u2019ll be in for a thrill. The 900 Turbo of this era was noted for its speed, and while it was let down by a bit of torque and understeer, it was still a brilliant machine to wind through fast, sweeping A roads. The key with a 900 Turbo is to push it to 80% and keep it there, it\u2019s that last 20% where its weaknesses start to show through.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1177587\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4091\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659.jpg\" alt=\"Saab 900 Turbo, Saab 900, 900 Torbo, Saab Turbo, Saab, Turbo, 900, classic car, retro car, motoring, automotive, carandclassic, carandclassic.co.uk, Saab buying guide\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375659-1020x680.jpg 1020w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This car, a later 16-valve version, packs the 185bhp four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual \u2018box. When you look at the engine, you might be a bit confused. It\u2019s front-wheel drive, but the engine is mounted longitudinally. And what\u2019s weirder is the fact the power is taken from the crank at the front end of the engine. It\u2019s all very strange, but would you expect anything less from Saab?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1177587\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668.jpg\" alt=\"Saab 900 Turbo, Saab 900, 900 Torbo, Saab Turbo, Saab, Turbo, 900, classic car, retro car, motoring, automotive, carandclassic, carandclassic.co.uk, Saab buying guide\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668-765x510.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/12375668-1020x680.jpg 1020w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This car, at \u00a312,950 is strong money. But for a car in this condition, you can\u2019t really argue. If you\u2019re going to get one of these cars, you want one that has been looked after, and that has escaped the late \u201890s when they were at the bottom of the depreciation curve, and as such, bought by people who just flogged them with little concern for maintenance.
