Bigger was better, loud wasn\u2019t loud enough, subtlety was not on the table. It was a decade for making a statement, for flashing one\u2019s cash and for getting all up in the face of your fellow man want whatever you had, for example, your car. \u2018But the E31 8 Series is from the \u201890s\u2019, we hear you ask. To which we say, yes it was. But don\u2019t forget, cars don\u2019t happen overnight. It was getting old in the tooth, it was bold enough, it didn\u2019t have enough swagger for the \u201880s marketplace. BMW needed something new, a flagship vehicle that would stun the motoring world. The E24 was great, but it was a product of the \u201870s. As we headed through the \u201880s and into the \u201890s, that simply wouldn\u2019t do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW dropped some $900,000,000 in today\u2019s money into development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1187795\">E31<\/a>. Computers were used extensively in the design of the body. We take that for granted now, but in \u201886 that was a big deal. So to was the plan to fit the E31 with a V8 or V12. This bruiser wasn\u2019t going to be powered by anything less. Somewhat absurdly, BMW offered the V12 with, and this is the truth, a six-speed manual gearbox. Madness, but definitely something that appealed to the autobahn-occupying speed demons of Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1187795\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"BMW, BMW E31, E31, 8 Series, 850i, V12, classic car, retro car, motoring, automotive, retro BMW, classic BMW, carandclassic, carandclassic.co.uk\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701-765x574.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701-1020x765.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/12517701.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly though, the E32 didn\u2019t roll out of dealerships until \u201890, and soon after the world was in all kinds of financial trouble. There was the global recession, the Persian Gulf War and other energy depleting issues. The BMW E31 was too late to the game. It was too big, too thirsty and too excessive. A shame, really. Just 31,000 were built between 1990 and 1999.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the E31 8 Series exists as perhaps the ultimate in modern classic style. Its wide hips, sleek lines and pop-up lights serve to remind us of a time when designers were allowed to truly go wild with their designs. This particular car also has just 75,000 miles on the clock, it boasts one of the most comprehensive service histories we\u2019ve ever seen with a classic car, and it can be yours for a mere \u00a313,995. New, it would have been in excess of \u00a3100,000 in today\u2019s money.
