This car, this brilliant collection of long, hard lines, that was impossibly low and that looked like it would make a chef\u2019s favourite knife look blunt was like nothing else. The Esprit, as Lotus had named it, was a replacement for the Europa. A curious, mid-engined van-looking machine. It was good, but it wasn\u2019t blessed in terms of its aesthetics. The Esprit, however, was. The styling was by Giorgetto Giugiaro under the close eye of Colin Chapman and designer, Oliver Winterbottom. Giugiaro was largely given free reign, though he was nudged to perhaps use his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maserati_Boomerang\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maserati Boomerang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concept as a source of inspiration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1217932\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016-800x532.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus, Lotus Esprit, classic Lotus, retro Lotus, James Bond Lotus, motoring, automotive, classic car, retro car, classified of the week, car and classic, carandclassic.co.uk, motoring, automotive, retro car, classic car\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016-800x532.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016-765x509.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016-1020x678.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970016.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This low, long and wide body, constructed from fibreglass (as was popular with Lotus due to its low weight) had to fit over the steel backbone chassis, which held the Lotus four-cylinder engine and the Citro\u00ebn C35 five-speed manual transaxle. And of course, it had to house two people, too. A lot to fit into a small space, but Giugiaro did it. Fair play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was launched, the motoring press was quick to praise the Esprit on its handling. With razor sharp steering, ample braking power and zero roll in the suspension, the Esprit gripped the road like people currently grip loo roll.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1217932\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022-800x532.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus, Lotus Esprit, classic Lotus, retro Lotus, James Bond Lotus, motoring, automotive, classic car, retro car, classified of the week, car and classic, carandclassic.co.uk, motoring, automotive, retro car, classic car\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022-800x532.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022-765x509.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022-1020x678.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970022.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then of course, there was the Bond connection. Namely 1977\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Spy Who Loved Me. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, the producers were going to stick with an Aston Martin. However, after leaving a badgeless Esprit outside the EON studios (who were making the film), the producer\u2019s intrigue led to them finding Lotus and casting the car. Sadly though, the stunt drivers simply didn\u2019t push it hard enough, resulting in disappointing scenes. In the end, Lotus test driver, Roger Becker, showed what the car could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do and was consequently hired as the stunt driver for the film!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what of the car we\u2019re looking at here, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1217932\">1979 Lotus Esprit<\/a>? It\u2019s not an S1 like Bond, but is instead an S2. But don\u2019t fret, it\u2019s largely the same car but with some improvements. There was better cooling thanks to new ducting, there was a more aggressive front spoiler and some other upgrades such as wider seats and better Smiths gauges. Power came from a 1,973 slant-four naturally aspirated engine with twin carbs resulting in 160hp. Not a lot by today\u2019s standards, but in a car with a curb weight of a mere 900kg and world class handling, speed isn\u2019t everything. The Esprit is a car for handling, not for setting speed records.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1217932\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018-800x532.jpg\" alt=\"Lotus, Lotus Esprit, classic Lotus, retro Lotus, James Bond Lotus, motoring, automotive, classic car, retro car, classified of the week, car and classic, carandclassic.co.uk, motoring, automotive, retro car, classic car\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018-800x532.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018-765x509.jpg 765w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018-1020x678.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.carandclassic.com\/magazine\/app\/uploads\/2020\/04\/12970018.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carandclassic.co.uk\/car\/C1217932\">1979 model<\/a> is in stunning condition and has had the same owner for 32 years. It\u2019s an original black car with gold highlights and gold Speedline wheels (though it\u2019s not a JPS) and stunning red and black interior. It\u2019s a wonderful, beautiful choice of specification. And it\u2019s been cared for, has a rich history, a fresh MOT and an overhaul of all the drive belts just completed. For us, this might not be the fastest model (later cars were turbo V8 remember) but that doesn\u2019t matter. This is a perfect spec of one of motoring\u2019s icons.
