Heritage should always be celebrated, especially when that heritage is as rich and as exciting as that of Jaguar<\/a>. Of course, the iconic British manufacturer knows this, which is why it has Jaguar Classic<\/a>. And it’s this arm of the company that will create six matched pairs of E-types to celebrate the iconic sports car\u2019s 60th anniversary in 2021: the E-type 60 Collection.<\/p>\n

Each pair of E-type 60 Edition cars pay tribute to two of the oldest and most famous Jaguar E-types<\/a> of all: \u20189600 HP\u2019 and \u201877 RW\u2019, which played pivotal roles in the unveiling of the car at its world debut in Geneva, Switzerland in March 1961.<\/p>\n

\"Jaguar,<\/p>\n

Back when the telly was black and white, and way before the Channel Tunnel, an Opalescent Gunmetal Grey 3.8-litre Fixed-Head Coupe registered \u20189600 HP\u2019 was one of the first two E-types unveiled to specially-invited guests at the Parc des Eaux Vives. Driven \u2018flat out\u2019 to Switzerland from Coventry the night before the launch, public relations manager Bob Berry arrived with minutes to spare for demonstration drives. Because there is no thrill quite like that of leaving it until the last minute, evidently!<\/p>\n

Berry’s car not only made it in time, it also proved to be incredibly popular with the assembled press and invited guests. Too popular, in fact, as it was soon evident to bosses that one car wasn’t going to cut it. As such, a call was made to legendary Jaguar Test and Development Engineer Norman Dewis, who was told to \u2018drop everything\u2019 and drive a British Racing Green 3.8-litre roadster registered \u201877 RW\u2019 overnight from Coventry to Geneva.<\/p>\n

Both cars were also used for media road tests, which proved the car\u2019s sensational performance \u2013 including its 150mph top speed \u2013 matched its jet aircraft-inspired lines honed in a wind tunnel by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer. The two drivers had risked life and limb to get the cars to Geneva on time, and the risk was worth it, because by doing so they cemented in place the legend of the E Type. Not a bad day’s work, all considered.<\/p>\n

\"Jaguar,<\/p>\n

And now Jaguar Classic is celebrating that momentous time in Geneva. Built for 2021 will be six pairs of the E-type 60 Edition hand assembled by the team at Jaguar\u2019s Classic Works facility in Warwickshire. Each pair will be based on existing 1960s 3.8-litre E-types, which will be fully-restored to exclusive 60th anniversary tribute specification.<\/p>\n

Each E-type 60 Collection pair will include one Flat Out Grey \u20189600 HP\u2019 coupe and one Drop Everything Green \u201877 RW\u2019 roadster, with unique paint formulations exclusively reserved for these cars. Each E-type 60 Edition will feature a number of 60th anniversary commemorative design details created in conjunction with Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson.<\/p>\n

Synonymous with the revolutionary zeitgeist of the Swinging Sixties, E-types were owned by celebrities including Steve McQueen, Brigitte Bardot, Frank Sinatra, George Harrison, Tony Curtis and Britt Ekland. And, thanks to the beauty of its sculptural forms, its functionality and its impact on design, an E-type became only the third car to join The Museum of Modern Art\u2019s design collection in 1996.<\/p>\n
