This weekend has been Goodwood Speedweek<\/a>, which, confusingly, was a three day event to celebrate all that is good and that is powerful from the automotive world both past and present. The idea was simple: stream the event live, offer intimate, exclusive coverage and as such, ensure those of us of a petroly disposition are satisfied. It’s a clever move by the team at Goodwood, who have of course had to postpone the hugely popular Festival of Speed and Revival due to the impact of Covid-19.<\/p>\n

\"Range<\/p>\n

Of course, this event, which was all physical and live at the Goodwood circuit, but broadcast out to the world via the internet and television coverage, was a great springboard from which manufacturers could launch messages. One such manufacturer was Land Rover, who quite rightly wanted to shout about fifty years of the Range Rover<\/a> brand. With an assembled gathering of Ranger Rovers of all shapes, ages and sizes, they took over the circuit for a lap like no other.<\/p>\n

An eclectic mix of Range Rovers from the last half century formed the parade to commemorate the special anniversary, from original classics to a modified ambulance and a 6×6 fire engine. The parade was led around the famous circuit by two iconic vehicles. The first, a 1969 drivable chassis, originally developed to allow engineers to monitor suspension and powertrain over rough terrain, ensuring the Range Rover was one of the most capable vehicles of its time. The second was a brand-new limited edition \u2018Range Rover Fifty\u2019, number 1 of 1970, produced specifically to mark this year\u2019s celebrations.<\/p>\n

\"Range<\/p>\n

All four generations of Range Rover featured in the convoy and included the Beaver Bullet, which broke 27 speed records in 1985, a Trans-American Expedition example which crossed the all-but-impassable Darien Gap in 1971 and a 2004 example used by Greater Manchester police.<\/p>\n

The same 50 Range Rovers also took part in a complex dynamic ’50\u2019 formation, creating a spectacular moving aerial image, co-ordinated by professional drivers, and captured with a drone. All 50 vehicles and drivers had to undergo training during the day to precisely navigate and position each vehicle to achieve the one-off visual.<\/p>\n

Of course, the gathering was aptly marked by the debut of the new Range Rover Fifty limited edition which epitomises the design, luxury and capability Range Rover stands for today.<\/p>\n

It was a fantastic celebration of Range Rover<\/a>, and also a significant reminder of just how diverse the brand has been over the years. If there was a problem, a challenge or a seemingly impossible destination at play, the Range Rover has always been the vehicle to overcome, to tackle and to arrive. And not many other brands can boast that.<\/p>\n
