Usable condition, that’s not too pristine to enjoy
The Appeal
Following their success with three-wheeled transportation, the Morgan Motor Company embarked on their first foray into four-wheeled cars with the aptly named 4/4 in 1936. So pleased were Morgan with their new model that it remained in production for a staggering 83 years - through various redesigns of course.
We’re pleased to offer this 1948 Drophead Coupé that’s been very well preserved with some charming patina. It’s in great, usable condition and benefits from the classic colour combination of white with a red interior. The vendor has carried out some recent maintenance and improvement work to keep it in optimal driving order and we’re informed that it’s proved a very usable classic in present ownership.
A Morgan really is the quintessential British roadster so if open-top vintage motoring appeals, don’t miss this delightful early post-war example.
Believed to be very rare - with the vendor claiming that just 106 Drophead Coupés were manufactured between 1948 and 1950, 25 of which are estimated to still exist
ASI certification and plate
Complete with all its Italian registration documentation
Period correct controls, instrumentation and switches
Morgan ownership is all about experiencing driving at its most fundamental level and as such, there’s very little in the way of modern conveniences to dilute the driver’s engagement with the car. That said, this 4/4 is nicely appointed, with plump seats and a high quality wooden dashboard.
The vendor points out that there are no holes or any significant wear to any of the seat upholstery or door cards and the matching red carpets present really well too. There’s not much wear to any of the controls and we enjoy the gently aged look taken on by the wooden dashboard over the years. We understand that the switchgear works well although the instrumentation is apparently in need of an overhaul.
With a light patina over all the surfaces, you’re not afraid to get in this car and drive it as much as possible, which we find very appealing indeed.
Straight bodywork with few imperfections and no obvious corrosion
Complete with its black canvas hood
Appears to be very sound underneath
We’re informed that the ash frame is in good order
We think white really suits this Morgan and we enjoy how it offsets the black hood and red interior. Speaking of the hood, the canvas looks in really good order, with very little wear and we’d assume it was replaced in the not so distant past.
There’s some rich patina to the paintwork in places with various light scratches and the odd chip around the edge of panels. We feel this makes the car more usable and there’s nothing we would term excessive damage anywhere to be seen. The car is really straight overall, with no big dents or any signs of serious corrosion. The underside looks particularly clean and the vendor assures us that the ash frame is in good condition.
The steel wheels present well and are complete with hubcaps. There are an additional two spare wheels attached at the rear of the car, which are useful to have on longer journeys. All the chrome trims look in reasonably good order with some general age related wear in places. All the light units and lenses are in good shape and we adore the trafficators which emerge from the bodywork in lieu of modern indicators.
Battery isolator and additional cooling fan added by the vendor
Brake shoes resurfaced
Overhaul of the steering system
This 4/4 offers a suitably vintage driving experience and was even somewhat old fashioned to drive when this one was built in 1948! You couldn’t hope for a closer engagement with the road and you really do feel every contour in the road through the controls.
We’re informed that the engine runs well, starting without fault and keeps cool with the aid of an additional cooling fan fitted by the vendor. The vendor states that it is great to drive, benefitting from a recent overhaul of the brakes and steering, as well as general maintenance during their ownership. It presents very well under the bonnet and we’re not informed of any issues.
This is a really smart example of a classic Morgan that we’re sure will find favour amongst enthusiasts.
Offered in usable condition for driving, but easily presentable enough to look great at any classic car show, this Morgan really is a charming machine and we're sure its next owner will have a lot of fun with it.
