In the immediate post-war years Ducati seized the opportunity to get Europe mobile at low cost and developed a range of inexpensive, durable and reliable motorcycles.
This being Ducati, of course, the firm couldn’t avoid adding a little verve to its otherwise utilitarian models. Take the 98 range of 1952. Conceived as a basic bike, buyers quickly realised that this was a true sporting model with racing style. Today the 98 is highly sought after by collectors for its clever blend of utility, capability and style.
This 98 appears to be a highly original early model in unrestored condition. It appears to be an early example and is presented in unmodified condition with light signs of age and patination. For enthusiasts of these wonderful bikes, this is a rare and enticing find.
The History and Paperwork
French registration records show it was first registered on 1st January 1950
However the 98 was only available from 1952 so this is likely to be incorrect
The 98 was available in a range of models of which this example is the more spartan specification
Unfortunately we know little about its history or servicing regime
The Condition
Original and unrestored condition showing light signs of patination
These do not detract from its style and arguably add to its character
Two-tone seat finished in red and black and undamaged or marked
Paintwork appears original and displays few marks or scuffs
Ducati decals and later ’24 Heures’ stickers in very good condition
Light marks on the handlebars and headlamp bezel
Anodised grey mudguards are factory correct finish and well kept
Open cradle, pressed steel frame
Chromework is lightly discoloured and would likely respond to polish
Rubber grips appear undamaged and well maintained
Clear speedometer with good decals
Black trim is well preserved and in apparently original condition
Lights and fittings undamaged and similarly original with light patina
The Mechanics
98cc single cylinder OHV Ducato engine
Engine develops 5.5bhp
