1961 Fiat 600 Jolly

Highlights

  • A slice of ''La Dolce Vita''
  • Fabulous open bodywork
  • Wicker seats
  • Restored in 2021

The Appeal

Is there a better mode of transport for getting to the beach than a Fiat 600 Jolly, with its wicker seats, frilly fabric roof and no doors? With the warm breeze in your hair and the sound of the four-cylinder engine in the background, this is certainly a stylish way to travel.

This particular 600 has recently been restored, with the work being finished in 2021. It now looks fantastic throughout, with its metallic blue paint remaining in excellent condition, and the interior showing no signs of wear.

Even the underside of the car is extremely clean, along with the engine bay. It looks like this Jolly has been carefully looked after and it should provide many more miles of enjoyable summer motoring.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 28th March 1961
  • Previously registered abroad
  • Imported to Portugal
  • Restoration completed in 2021
  • Only driven around 1,000km since restoration
  • 82,500km recorded on the odometer
  • Whilst the Vendor firmly believes this to be an original 'Jolly' by Ghia, neither he nor we have been able to prove this.

 The Interior

  • Retrimmed interior
  • Charming wicker seats
  • Fabric roof and no doors

The interior of this Fiat could almost be considered part of its exterior. With no doors and a fabric roof, being a passenger in this Jolly is certainly a very open air experience. The sicker seats are a fantastic feature too, something we wish more car manufacturers would consider.

The interior has clearly been the subject of careful restoration, with the wicker looking to have been renewed, and a good set of carpets. The fabric roof is very clean and tidy, with its neat row of tassels shimmering in the breeze.

A simple instrument cluster provides the driver with information on speed, oil pressure and coolant temperature. Below the dashboard, a parcel shelf provides a little extra storage, and he front passenger is provided with a grab handle, in car the lack of doors becomes a bit much.

Additional storage space is found under the front bonnet, next to the fuel tank, and lined with stout rubber matting.

 The Exterior

  • Excellent metallic blue paintwork
  • Fabulous open-air styling
  • Very clean underneath

This distinctive Fiat cuts a fabulous figure as it heads for the beach on a sunny afternoon. The pared-back bodywork gives it an air of lightness and the fabric roof is a great feature. And with no doors or windows, there’s even less to go wrong than usual on this car.

Finished in a fetching shade of metallic blue, the paint is very well presented, with hardly a scratch or blemish to be found in the body. The paint shows a deep shine and appears to have been well applied.

The exterior trim is in good condition, with chromed rails running along the car’s sides showing no signs of pitting along with plating on the bumpers and hubcaps. The steel wheels are in good condition and the tyres appear to retain good tread. Underneath there are no signs of corrosion or damage, and the body and running gear all looks very clean and tidy.

 The Mechanics

  • 633cc four-cylinder engine
  • Rear-mounted, water cooled
  • Engine bay extremely clean

With the car having only been driven around 1,000km since its restoration was completed in 2021, the engine bay remains very clean and presentable. Mounted at the rear of the car, the engine comprises of four cylinders and is water cooled.

We’re told that the car starts and runs very well, accelerating as it should do and changing gear soothly. There are no reported leaks or smoke and it is said to brake well.

With its simple mechanical components, this Fiat can be easily maintained by the home mechanic if desired. And looking at the general condition of the car, it seems to have been well restored and maintained.
