1965 Ford Mustang 200ci ‘Six’

 • Recently imported and UK registered
 • Original “Thriftpower” straight six
 • Amazing original condition

The Appeal

The original ‘Pony Car’ made its debut in 1964 and the Mustang has been a mainstay of American performance motoring ever since. That makes really early examples of the classic model hugely collectable among enthusiasts.

This one is a 1965 car from late in the first full year of production. It comes with Ford’s 200 cubic inch (3.3-litre) ‘Thriftpower’ straight-six, which was marketed as a more economical option compared with the 289 ci V8s.

Direct from a private collection, this beautifully presented car arrived in the UK late last year and is now road legal and fully registered, ready for its next owner to enjoy.

The Interior

 • Gorgeous blue vinyl seats
 • Integrated Mustang radio-cassette player
 • Strip speedo
 • Three-spoke sports steering wheel

Inside, the Mustang presents wonderfully, with smart blue vinyl upholstery and a matching blue dashboard featuring a strip speedometer and a two-dial dash.

The carpets and door cards match the upholstery and the headlining is in great order. Desirable extras include an integrated Mustang-branded radio-cassette player and Ford’s optional centre console cup holder – indeed, the Mustang was the first car to feature this now commonly expected option. Perfect for those drive-thru buckets of pop…

Aside from a few small pulls in the stitching of the driver’s seat and some light crazing to the speedometer binnacle plastic, it’s all in wonderful order.

The Exterior

 • Wimbledon White with French Blue vinyl roof
 • Original Mustang aluminium wheel trims
 • Totally original, unmodified specification
 • Stunningly presented

This is a wonderfully presented car that looks amazing in its blue over white colour scheme. It’s in remarkable order throughout and the blue vinyl roof is free of any notable imperfections.

Indeed, the same can be said of the rest of the bodywork, the only area we could fine that may need some future treatment being some minor corrosion inside one door shut. The Wimbledon White paintwork is in remarkable condition and has a deep shine.

It’s fitted with its original aluminium Mustang hubcaps – quite a rarity these days as some many owners switched them to sports wheels.

The Mechanics

 • Thriftpower straight-six
 • Cruise-O-Matic three-speed auto
 • Lovely under bonnet presentation
 • Drives brilliantly

Under the bonnet, this car is exceptionally well-presented with the 200 ci capacity picked out on the traditional Ford Blue air filter casing.

It’s a smooth performing power plant, coupled to Ford’s three-speed Cruise-O-Matic auto transmission for driving ease and simplicity.

We were able to conduct a short test drive on private land during which the car performed faultlessly, with good brakes and steering.

The vendor reports that it drives very well indeed. It’s also very simple mechanically, meaning that future maintenance should be a simple task for its next owner.

The Summary

This is a truly lovely example of the sought-after early Mustang, in equally desirable two-door notchback coupé form. It’s wonderfully presented and a true collector’s item, with an unspoilt exterior and gorgeous cabin.

A lovely car, and one that would make a wonderful addition to any Mustang collection.
