1965 Ford Mustang 'U-Code' Project

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Rare U-Code engine, manufactured for only six months upon release
  • First generation Mustang with no modifications
  • Engine has some new components
  • Not currently running
  • Requires full restoration

The Appeal

When the Mustang was released, the first six months of production became known as the 1964½. On first inspection, they’re completely identical to what followed, save for one specific option that was intended for the thriftier customer - the U-Code 2.8L inline-six. It was the lightest engine the car ever carried, and has now become the rarest of the first generation.

This example is ready for a complete restoration both inside and out before it can hit the road. While the muscle car within might be dormant,  it’ll be ready and raring to hit the road once it’s been taken in by the dedicated enthusiast.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly we don’t know much regarding the history of this car
  • American registration
  • VAT and import duties paid
  • Subject to a stalled restoration that was never completed

The Interior

  • Interior is in very poor condition
  • All original period features and instruments
  • Headlining torn and hanging free from roof
  • Dashboard shows extensive surface corrosion
  • Door cards have extensive staining and wear
  • Seating is heavily damaged with gaps, holes and missing covering
  • Rear bench seat shows extensive damage, revealing the springs underneath
  • Carpets show wear but appear relatively clean and free of holes
  • Steering wheel cover shows extensive cracking
  • Rear headlining and pillars are badly damaged, revealing the framework underneath
  • Boot is in rough shape with extensive surface corrosion

The Exterior

  • In need of full restoration throughout
  • Paintwork has fogged across the vehicle
  • Paint loss, blistering and corrosion to multiple areas
  • Chromework shows extensive wear
  • Front bumper shows some loss of finish, corrosion and fogging
  • One missing reverse lamp
  • Branding is all present and correct, but could do with a good cleanup
  • Extensive blistering and corrosion to wheel arches
  • Wheels appear in decent order but do require some restoration work
  • Tyres have plenty of tread
  • We haven’t seen underneath the vehicle, but understand it also requires extensive work

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the rare U-Code 2.8L straight-six
  • Three-speed manual transmission
  • Not currently in operational condition
  • Extensive corrosion to the engine bay
  • Some newer components have been fitted as part of a stalled restoration
  • In need of a thorough mechanical restoration
  • Some spare components appear to be present with the car

Summary

While time hasn’t been particularly kind to this first-generation Mustang, it’ll make an impressive project for a complete restoration. If you’re feeling ambitious, you’ll no doubt have a fun, interesting and rewarding job ahead of you with this rare example.
