Proving conclusively that great works of design don’t always translate into great commercial success, the Bizzarrini Europa was a lightweight high performance car which featured some superb engineering and weighed in at only 650kg. But by the time a dozen cars had been produced the company was on its knees. A handful were assembled after bankruptcy had been declared, but this car is said to have been the last one produced while Bizzarrini was still a going concern.
This tale of absolute devotion to the cause of reaching the heights of automotive design means that the Europa 1900 GT offered for sale here is a spectacularly rare machine. It is utterly alluring and will be sure to arouse considerable interest wherever it goes.
With its highly tuned 1.9-litre engine and advanced suspension setup, this car is definitely one to add to your collection. And having been beautifully restored in 2010 — with only 2,000km covered since — it’s ready to be enjoyed as the alluring piece of mechanical artwork that it is.
The History and Paperwork
First registered in 1969
Fewer than 20 Europas were produced by Bizzarrini, with some sources saying as few as 12 were built
Some further cars were assembled from parts after the company had been declared bankrupt
This car is said to be the final car produced before the bankruptcy
The first Italian owner reportedly kept the car for 35 years, before selling the car to France
Restored in 2010 by Diomante
Extensive original documentation on file
The car has reportedly covered only 2,000km since its restoration
The Interior
Simple, lightweight, pared-back interior
Drilled pedals
Bucket seats
The Europa excels itself through its commitment to simplicity in the pursuit of weight saving. As such, this Bizzarrini is an elegantly designed car, especially in its interior. Lightweight bucket seats provide plenty of support, the fitted carpets are clean and tidy and the dashboard is uncluttered.
We couldn’t see any real signs of wear to the upholstery, with the seats looking very well presented. Attractive suede door cards add a touch of class, and match the dashboard top.
The instrument cluster sits ahead of the steering wheel and places the tachometer in prime position, proving this car’s sporting intention. Charmingly, there isn’t even a speedometer to be seen.
To the rear, accessed via a glass hatchback, is a practically proportioned luggage bay, which is carpeted throughout, and very well presented.
The Exterior
Extremely stylish design by Pietro Vanni
Fibreglass body shell
Restored to a high standard
With its sweeping lines and fared-in headlamps, the Europa is a car we could spend all day just admiring from every angle. The curvaceous wings run seamlessly from front to rear and the glass hatchback is an artfully sculpted piece.
Having been restored in 2010, and only covered about 2,000km since completion, the car remains in superb condition throughout. Its bright red paintwork gleams and accentuates the car’s lines perfectly. The chrome trim is all present and correct, with a deep shine, and the lamp lenses look clear and bright.
The car runs on a matching set of alloy wheels, flamboyantly finished in gold, and they are shod in a matching set of Michelin tyres.
The Mechanics
1,897cc Opel engine, tuned by Conrero
Adjustable fully independent suspension
Four wheel disc brakes and limited-slip differential
Under the long, sweeping bonnet of this Europa lies its beating mechanical heart: a highly tuned version of the 1.9-litre Opel engine. It was reportedly tuned by Conrero for use in competition, but was never actually campaigned.
The car is designed to have excellent handling, with independently adjustable suspension all round. So you’ll be able to set it up exactly how you want it.
The engine bay is extremely clean and tidy, with the trumpets proudly protruding from the twin Weber carburettors. The engine is positioned well aft of the front axle, for improved weight distribution and handling.
Summary
In all, this Bizzarrini offers an extremely rare chance to acquire one of these sought-after grand tourers. It is presented in an alluring state of restoration and will be an ideal car to take to prestigious international events .
