THE APPEAL

Following the success of the large Neue Klasse sedans launched at the beginning of the sixties, BMW earned a reputation as a manufacturer of prestigious, well-finished performance sports sedans.

To extend the range and increase sales, starting from 1966 the 1602 was introduced, a compact and agile two-door based on a shortened chassis similar to that of high-end sedans, with independent rear suspension and front disc brakes, equipped with the famed M10 engine in a 1.6 litre 85 hp version.

Starting from 1971, the BMW E6, better known as 02 Touring, was introduced, a three-door station wagon or shooting brake version of the 1602 with a streamlined and aerodynamic design, which combined the iconic bold front section of the 2002 with a new back with a sloping profile equipped with a practical tailgate, retaining the peculiar circular taillights.

Mechanically identical to the 2002, the Touring proved to be a far too advanced concept for its time and wasn't very successful, being produced in just over 30,000 units until 1974.

Today, by virtue of its rarity, its pleasant and sporty line and its performance and driving characteristics identical to those of the most common two-doors, the 02 Touring is increasingly sought after by enthusiasts.

This 1972 BMW 1600 Touring, in mostly original condition and is a nice example of the first series, with the pleasant front grille with chrome strips preceding the 1973 restyling. Mechanically, it has undergone the conversion to 'ti' specification with the addition of a Weber DCOE40 twin-body carburettor and 4-in-1 stainless exhaust manifold. All original components have been preserved and will be delivered with the car.

Rare, original and appealing, the BMW 02 Tourings are much more appreciated today than they were in the seventies, when their innovative, practical and sporty bodywork was not fully understood by the public and their prices are constantly rising. This well-preserved and original example constitutes an interesting opportunity to acquire a practical and versatile historic vehicle capable of offering an exciting driving experience.
