The Appeal
There aren’t many cars as legendary as the Coupe De Ville. Over decades, these big, brash motors represented the very best of American automotive culture - giant, gas-guzzling land-liners that were loaded with personality and detail.
These cars also bred their own community during the late 70s - the lowrider culture. With some smart engineering and a penchant for elaborate paintwork, this was born out of the Southern states, where everything from art, to family to religion were exemplified - every car becoming a brash, even rather garish tribute to their owner’s lives and beliefs.
With their cars only inches from the pavement, riding atop a hydraulic suspension, they would embark on low, slow cruises alongside adoring crowds - a meeting of like-minded individuals not too different to the classic car meets of today.
It’s little wonder that evoking lowrider culture has become a fiercely dedicated subsect of the American classic market. This Cadillac follows all of the same principles, resulting in a fabulous classic lowrider with a great big 8.2L V8 powerplant and a stock of impressive hydraulics.
The History and Paperwork
- Built as a standard Coupe De Ville in 1976
- First registered in the UK in March 1998
- Here, it appears to have been restored in 2008
- Since then the car has been progressively customised
- The car currently indicates 54,154 miles, but this sadly can’t be verified
- MOT exempt, and last tested in 2016
- The car was sold by Car & Classic in 2022
- Since then, the current owner has kept it in a specialist facility in London
- Here, it’s been kept dry and comfortable with an onsite mechanic tending to it regularly
- Sadly there is no paperwork or history provided with the car
The Interior
- Laden in rich red leather and woodgrain, this is quintessential 70s glamour!
- Highly original throughout with no known modifications
- This is excepting, of course, the controller for the suspension
- The seats are in strong order with creasing and some stretched stitching
- However, there are no substantial rips or tears
- We can spot a slight scuff to the far sides of each front seat
- The rear seats are in very good order
- The woodgrain and leather dashboard is in excellent condition
- All instruments appear to be original, including the radio
- These are all in good condition with age-commensurate patina
- Attractive wood-centre steering wheel with Cadillac branding
- From what we’ve been informed, the interior options are working well
- The hydraulic control switchbox is not fixed in place for easy control
- Carpets and headlining look in good order with age-commensurate wear
- The boot is clean and solid - but is occupied by the hydraulic equipment, as you’d expect
The Exterior
- Highly impressive American aesthetics with sharp edges
- Simply enormous - 19ft long and 6.5ft wide
- Highly impressive two-tone red paintwork with flaked upper panels
- Specially applied white accents and patterned detailing
- The paint is in excellent order with only light wear
- The chromework is bright and nicely presented with gentle patina
- The glasswork and lenses are in great order with no chips or cracks
- The car also features ‘Lowlife’ swirl detailing on the rear pillars and boot door
- We note that a ‘Lowrider’ badge, originally stood over the grille, is now missing
- The vendor has informed us however he does have this and it can be easily reattached
- The car is sat on a set of off-white wire wheels, which are shod in ringed tyres
- These look to have plenty of tread
- Underneath, the car looks excellent with only minor pockets of wear
- Metalwork and suspension components look solid with only surface corrosion
The Mechanics
- Powered by a simply enormous 8.2L V8 powerplant
- 4-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission
- Three electro-hydraulic pump suspension with 24-volt electrical controls
- This enables the car to be lifted at the front, rear, or side-to-side, as well as being lowered
- Engine bay in good order with age-commensurate wear
- The engine and transmission were rebuilt less than 3000 miles ago
- We’ve no reports of any leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke from the car
- It’s reportedly starting first time and running impeccably
- The suspension is in good working order and really accentuates this unique custom vehicle
- The car has always been well-maintained with an onsite mechanic
