  • Californian car

The Appeal

Do 5.7-litre V8 muscle cars ever go out of fashion? We don’t think so. And there’s something incredibly visceral about the Camaro, it sounds and looks exactly as you want a muscle car to sound and look.

Here we have a beautifully presented 1976 Rallye Sport model, which has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration inside and out, as well as a full engine rebuild. With a gorgeous colour scheme too, this is too good to miss if you’re a fan of American muscle.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in February 1976
  • Dealer LT model with dealer Rallye Sport option
  • Imported from California in 2018
  • 2 owners
  • Restoration work carried out by Van der Ham bodywork, Netherlands (2018)
  • APK (MOT equivalent) to February 2023

The Interior

  • Newly retrimmed black vinyl upholstery
  • Modern retro-styled sound system, with USB, SD and Bluetooth
  • 2.1A USB ports installed
  • Door pins styled after dice
  • Rear shelf mounted Pioneer speakers

The interior of this Camaro is a heady mix of the modern and the classic. Care has been taken to keep as much of the interior original as possible, while adding some touches of modernity to make the car more usable in today’s world.

The vinyl upholstery was retrimmed in 2018, and so presents in excellent condition, with no damage, tears or signs of wear we could see. Likewise, the carpets and complementary overmats, complete with blue binding, appear in very fine condition, with no signs of damage or staining we could see.

All of the internal trim presents well and appears nicely fitted, including the headliner which shows no evidence of sagging or damage. Looking at the internal brightwork, such as the window winders and door handles, they wear a nice level of natural weathering yet still retain a healthy lustre.

For the most part, the dash and switchgear are all original items, bar the addition of two USB ports on the transmission tunnel. Everything looks in good, solid condition and has a nice level of patination without looking old or overly worn. The controls and instruments are all nice and clear, with clearly legible lettering and icons.

At the back, the typically large boot is finished with dark grey carpet and holds the full-size spare wheel.

The Exterior

  • Two-tone black and blue paintwork (done in 2018)
  • Bright blue pinstriping
  • New RS wheels and tyres

The Camaros of the mid-70s were always handsomely styled vehicles, and the work that has been carried out on this RS model has enhanced those already chiselled features. When the car was imported in 2018, the vendor had it fully resprayed with a new two-tone colour scheme, as well as having attractive pinstriping added to accentuate the car’s lines and curves.

With the car apparently only having covered 1,000 or so miles since the restoration, you will be unsurprised to hear that the paint presents exceptionally well. Upon close examination, we could not see any notable blemishes, scuffs or marks. The bodywork is similarly well maintained, with no signs of damage or corrosion that we could see, and nice straight panels with even gaps.

All of the external brightwork looks to wear a similar level of patination to the internal trim. So it appears to be well cared for but original, with some evidence of age, but no marks or damage that would worry us.
As well as refreshing the paintwork, the vendor has fitted new RS wheels, colour-coded blue with polished centres, barrels and lips. These are shod in Grabber HP tyres that have covered approximately 1,000 miles and so should have lots of life in them yet.

The underside of the car appears to be very clean and straight. There’s a minimal amount of surface corrosion to some components, but no damage or significant corrosion we could identify.

The Mechanics

  • 5.7-litre (350 cu in) V8
  • Engine rebuilt in 2018, c. 1,000 miles ago
  • 2.5” Flow Masters exhaust system
  • Automatic transmission with B&M shifter

As part of the restoration process, the vendor tells us that they had the engine completely rebuilt in 2018. Since then it has covered about 1,000 miles, so it’s just about run in now. The engine bay is very clean, with the red painted block, polished heads and Edelbrock air cleaner dominating the space.

The vendor assures us that the car runs very well, accelerating, handling and stopping as it should, with a meaty V8 soundtrack. They tell us that there are no leaks, smoke or any mechanical issues they are aware of.

Summary

Packing an iconic 350 “small block” V8, this Camaro RS is perfect for experiencing a genuine 70s muscle car. Having been extensively restored and meticulously cared for, it presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a very well finished and nicely specified Camaro.

It’s genuinely rare to find an RS model in this kind of condition, and that rarity combined with the gorgeous custom colour scheme of this car makes it one of the most attractive examples we’ve seen in some time.
