A massive redesign of its split screen forebear, the second generation T2, affectionately known as the “bay window”, most recognisable in its campervan form was greatly improved from a driveability point of view whilst still retaining the charming, fun style that made the original so popular.
This 1978 late model bay window is a wonderful example of the revered model, extensively refurbished throughout its long tenure with its current owner, it has seen a recent respray and engine replacement amongst a host of other cosmetic and mechanical refreshes. For the avid adventure seeker, this incredibly smart classic van presents as a wonderful way into the ultra cool classic VW “scene”.
The History and Paperwork
- Genuine late model bay window van
- Originally a UK market right hand drive van
- As we understand the van was taken into The Netherlands where it was converted to left hand drive
- The van returned to the UK circa 1984, where it has remained ever since
- Purchased by the vendor from a friend in 2005
- The van was issued a new V5 in 2018 after the vendor recovered it from their insurance company following it being stolen
- The logbook was therefore re-issued in 2018
- Subject to a comprehensive rebuild after the van was recovered
- Accompanied by a selection of invoices for servicing and maintenance work performed on the van
- Invoice for 2021 engine replacement and mechanical overhaul performed by London based specialist Jacks Garage at a cost of around £3700
- Both tax and MOT exempt due to the van’s historic status and age
- Despite MOT exemption the current owner has had the van MOT’d regularly
- Current MOT valid with no advisories into February 2024
- V5 registration document present with the vehicle

- Fitted with a legendary flat four air cooled engine, situated in the rear of the van
- Presented in great overall mechanical order
- In 2021 the original engine was removed and a new replacement was fitted by London based specialist Jacks Garage
- A series of other mechanical refurbishments were undertaken at the same time, totalling a cost of around £3700
- The vendor informs us that the van has also been rewired under their ownership
- Engine oil temperature gauge fitted
- Two new batteries (main and leisure) have been installed
- The van is reported to fire into life well and provide an excellent overall driving experience
- Underside looks to be in good clean form

Summary
