Highlights
- Rally Raid edition with plenty of options
- Highly original condition with some restoration required
- 3.5L V8 engine with BM4 carbs
- Desirable two-door specification
The Appeal
It’s no secret that the Range Rover Classic is a legendary fixture in the Land Rover product range. With its angular lines and all-terrain performance, this is a car that really established a legend. This wasn’t just limited to the groundsman’s follies or the car’s fascinating royal family lineage, but on the rally track too. With their outstanding suspension, high stance and powerful engines, these cars were practically perfect for diving across the rough-and-ready landscapes of the track.
This example has reportedly been used on the track, and is presented with plenty of the desirable raid options, creating a lesser-spotted example of a keystone in the world of off-road motoring.
The History and Paperwork
- Sadly we don’t have any information regarding the history of this car
- Built in 1980 for the European market
- Always based in France
- Two reported owners from new
- The vendor reports that the car has taken part in rallying
- Has been repainted, though some restoration is still required
- Currently indicates 72,726k on a five-figure odometer
- Sadly we can’t verify this as an authentic indication of the car’s mileage
- We’re not aware of any paperwork provided with the car
Specific Rally Raid option includes:
- RPM tachometer
- Both bumpers and frame fitted with holes (to lift the car and drop the rear end in the bush)
- Skid plate on the front of the vehicle
The Interior
- Rare two-tone leather interior
- Nicely presented grey dashboard
- Tan leather seating with rich gold carpets throughout
While Range Rover Classics aren’t quite the luxuriously appointed standard as their modern counterparts, this example is still quite the comfortable cabin. Retrimmed in a beautiful golden tan, the seats are a particular highlight, being presented with no rips or tears and only the gentlest sag.
The dashboard is in good order, with every instrument bright and easy to read. There are a few scuffs and marks here and there, though it’s very minor and of little detriment to the overall car. The vendor notes that the central locking system is in need of replacement.
The carpets are in fair order, with a tear below the dashboard being the main hindrance to their appearance, while the headlining is in fair condition with strictly age-commensurate wear. The interior Raid option of a reinforced central glovebox is present and correct, as is the engine tachometer and toggle switch. A fire extinguisher is also mounted to the rear.
The interior is in worse condition towards the rear bay, where the headlining has an access cut to the wiper motor, there are some cracks to the plastic panelling and the black tarpaulin is looking a little threadbare. There is some surface wear to the floors and metalwork, though we can’t spot any signs of perforation.
The Exterior
- Striking blue paintwork with black trims
- Tinted rear window
- Sandblasted wheels repainted to original specification
Highly presented and evocative, the angular lines of this Range Rover Classic are in good overall order. The body panels and metalwork are in good condition with only light signs of wear throughout, and no major signs of paint chipping, peeling or cracks. There is, of course, some light blemishing, though it’s hardly a detriment to the car. We can spot some areas where corrosion appears to have been painted over, particularly on the panel seams, where there appears to be some light feathering.
The glasswork and lenses are in good condition with no chips or cracks we’ve been able to spot, and the plastic trims carry only light signs of wear, with no significant signs of peel or lacquer loss.
The car is sat on its original wheels, which have been shotblasted and repainted to original factory specifications. The tyres are new and look in excellent order.
The car’s carrying raid bumpers and rails, and features a tow hitch to the rear. Underneath, the car shows some corrosion throughout, particularly around the sills, and has a minor oil leak - both of which are fairly standard with retro Range Rovers.
The Mechanics
- Powered by the 3.5L V8 powerplant with BM4 carbs
- 4-speed manual transmission
- Recently serviced
Under the bonnet, we get a nice view of the well-respected 3.5L V8 powerplant, which is presented in good condition. We can’t spot any significant areas of concern, and save for a slight oil leak, is in fine fettle. The vendor notes that a spot of rewiring may be necessary, as this is somewhat worn.
The vendor informs us that recent work includes:
- New alternator
- New water, oil and pressure sensors
- New fuses
- New oil and filters throughout
- New rear silencer to factory specification
From what we understand, the car is in generally fine working order, including the Auxiliary fuel pump, and the optional BM4 carbs are recently renewed. Also the exhaust was not correctly in place during the photoshoot but it has a perfect fitment right now.
Summary
With its scarce Raid options, and solid specification, we’re fairly sure that this Range Rover will attract plenty of attention. A good, solid example that’s ready to return to the road.
