The Appeal

Jaguar have cemented their reputation in the automotive industry creating luxurious and often well performing vehicles. The Jaguar essence is arguably no better encapsulated than in the 1989 XJ-S 5.3L Convertible. Graced with their legendary 5.3L high efficiency V12 engine which offers some 291 bhp, still a potent amount even by today’s standards. Furthermore, the convertible top allows you not only to truly enjoy those summer days but also hear more of the 12-cylinder symphony pushing you along the road. With over 100,000 examples produced during a 24-year production period, it's easy to see that the XJ-S formula was a good one. 1991 saw Ford acquire Jaguar thus making the 1989 XJ-S one of the last truly 'British' XJ-S' to be produced, after which the name was abbreviated to XJS amongst other changes. For many, the XJ-S is the holy grail of classic British luxury grand tourers.

The leather seats are in a like new condition, completely absent of any rips or tears and with barely any signs of wear. The headlining of the convertible top is colour matched to fit with the cream interior and remains in excellent condition. The XJ-S is not short on creature comforts such as a very advanced for the time trip computer and electronically adjustable seats for both the driver and passenger, all of which are reported to be working. As the XJ-S is a 2-seater, it offers ample space for its occupants while not compromising on luggage space. The parcel shelf behind the seats remains in excellent condition with matching carpets throughout the vehicle. The boot is in very good condition and includes a car cover, tonneau cover for the convertible hood, a spare wheel and tool kit, all of which are also in very good condition.

The Exterior

  • Signal red paintwork in excellent condition overall
  • 4 matching Michelin Primacy HP tyres all with good tread
  • Original Jaguar alloys in excellent condition
  • Glass and brightwork in very good condition overall

The Signal red paintwork of this XJ-S really helps it to stand out, absent of any noticeable blemishes and chips it has clearly been very well looked after. Moving down the vehicle the chrome trim has received equal treatment and remains with a mirror shine and absent of any corrosion. The black convertible hood was recently replaced and still retains a like new condition. Furthermore, the black bumpers which often suffer from colour fade have also been looked after as on this example they still have a uniform black tone to them. There is a very small dent to the offside rear quarter bumper which is only noticeable when inspecting closely. The badges through are all in excellent original condition with a special mention for the bonnet badge and of course the iconic 'V12' badge mounted to the boot, a great reminder of the masterpiece powering this distinctive vehicle.

The Mechanics

  • Legendary Jaguar 5.3L HE V12 engine
  • 3-speed automatic gearbox
  • Disc brakes on all 4 corners
  • Tidy engine bay

Covering relatively low mileage since 1989, this XJ-S has been treated to regular servicing regardless of the use in-between. This is a great indicator that the vehicle has been cherished and well looked after, this is backed up by the 9 service stamps in the service book and thorough service history present. With just over 1000 miles covered in the last 5 years, it is good to see that the servicing was not forgotten about or disregarded. The V12 masterpiece within boasts a Lucas fuel system as well as authentic Jaguar belts, a nice detail that shows cost was not an issue when maintaining this glorious vehicle. The engine bay is in tidy condition with some attention possibly needed to the sound proofing which has torn in areas. The underside of this example is also in a tidy condition.

Summary

For many, few are better than Jaguar's XJ-S when it comes to luxury grand tourers. This example has been tastefully configured and evidently cherished throughout its life, this is supported by a thorough service history included with the vehicle. Having covered relatively low mileage considering the age, this XJ-S definitely has many more miles left to cover. It is a vehicle that deserves to grace the roads for as long as possible and will definitely turn heads wherever it goes. The luxury of the late 1980's is unmistakable and evident in this example given its specification. With examples of the V12 XJ-S in this condition becoming rarer to find, this could well be the classic British luxury tourer that you need in your life.
