The Appeal
High-end watches and cars, they’ve long been bedfellows. We assume it’s because of the mechanical nature and meticulous detail that both are graced with. Whatever the case, they seem to go together like a fresh baguette and fine, ripe camembert.
So it was that Mercedes-Benz entered into a collaboration with Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen, offering a special edition of their CLS55 AMG model that reflected the styling of IWC’s new Ingenieur watch. With just 55 examples built, it’s now an incredibly rare and sought-after model.
Presented here in superb condition, with incredibly low mileage and a comprehensive Mercedes-Benz service history, we think this may well be the best example of this rare car in existence. If you love driving something luxurious, deeply powerful and very exclusive, then this should definitely be on your list.
The History and Paperwork

One of the unique features of this special edition is the combination of black and titanium grey leather, designed to match the car’s internal and external trim, as well as the Ingenieur watch it’s based on. As you’d expect with such low mileage, the leather is presented in superb condition, with some very gentle signs of use, but no tears, damage or notable wear we could see.
Complementing the leather nicely, the carpeting and floor mats are black and look to be in excellent condition, with no staining or threading on show. Similarly, the Designo Alcantara headlining looks to be secure and taut, with no sagging or wear.
The trim and switchgear is much the same as in a standard car, but is augmented with handsome matte-finish titanium grey trim, Designo piano black accents and a dash clock designed to reflect the styling of the Ingenieur watch. Again, it all looks very smart indeed, with no real signs of wear and tear we could discern. We’re informed by the vendor that everything works just as it should too, with no faults or issues reported.
Despite the swooping coupé styling, the boot of the CLS is still very generous. This example is neatly trimmed in black carpet that shows little to no evidence of wear or use.

With its unique combination of dark metallic and matte Titanium Grey external colours, this special edition CLS really does look fantastic. We think the subtle yet special colours nicely highlight the car’s fine curves and elegant proportions. The paintwork shows in fine fettle too, with no major marks, scuffs, scratches or blemishes we could see – clearly it has been very well cared for and meticulously preserved.
The bodywork shows in exceptional condition for a car nearing its 20th year too. Panels are neat, straight and show no signs of corrosion or damage we could discern. Swage lines are crisp while all of the panel gaps and shut lines appear to be even and consistent.
As befits a special edition, the external trim is unique to this model and finished in smart coordinated matte Titanium Grey. To our eyes it looks to be extremely well presented, with nothing missing, cracked or misaligned. It complements the paintwork very well and gives the car a truly exclusive finish.
Underneath everything looks to be in very fine order, with not even a hint of corrosion or damage. In fact, it’s a strikingly clean and straight underside that has clearly benefited from extensive care and maintenance.
The alloy wheels are smart five-spoke, 19-inch AMG items. They bear the same attractive matte Titanium Grey finish as the rest of the external trim and look to be in very good order, other than a slight scuff to the passenger side rear wheel. They’re finished with a matched set of Hankook tyres.

That vast 5.5-litre V8 is fitted with a supercharger in this AMG iteration of the CLS, meaning it develops a mighty 476hp. What this means is a 0-100Km/h dash of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of some 250Km/h. Huge figures, especially for such an opulently appointed car.
We’re told that the car is in perfect running order, with no issues or faults to declare. Certainly, it comes with an extensive service record and, with less than 26,000Km on the clock, should be a truly exceptional example of the breed for many years to come.
