The Appeal

The 1303S was the most advanced iteration of the Volkswagen Beetle. It was based upon the so-called 'Super Beetle' platform, with Macpherson Strut front suspension. The 1303 had a curved windscreen and padded dashboard, while the added letter 'S' denotes the 1.6-litre twin-port flat-four.

The vendor tells us of this example:

"She is a great little car, and I could be making a big mistake selling her. What will be will be. She’s fun to drive, makes you smile, and always draws attention, looks great, runs good, she just needs someone who can spend some time with her. I had an initial MOT-type inspection, changed the carburettor and had the engine tuned in 2022 and she’s been going ever since."

History and Paperwork

UK market RHD example
The car has reportedly lived in various parts of the UK
Kept under cover on the driveway, used for short trips in the summer (avoiding rain)
Exempt from MOT and road tax
Underwent an initial MOT-style inspection, carburettor change, and engine tuning in 2022
40,699 miles indicated
There are a range of invoices since the '70s including initial service history and MOT records
In the early '80s, some major works completed and again in the '90s invoice for major works including engine
In the early 2000s there are numerous invoices and photos of a rebuild

The Condition

Very presentable and attractive example, with smart aftermarket alloy wheels
A couple of areas exhibit bubbling paintwork, but we're informed that the car is solid overall
Some damage to the paintwork on the driver's door
Earlier-type front wings fitted, with indicators supplementing those in the bumper
Missing bonnet rubbers, but replacements are present and ready to be installed
Some damage around where the sunroof cap joins the roof
There is a full car cover included
Spare rear light covers are included

The interior would benefit from some attention:

Dash is split, but a spare dash is ready to be installed
Headlining is stained
Driver's seat has a tear and both front seats could use refurbishment
Back seat is in good condition but different from the front seats
Front of CD player is not available

The Mechanics

1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four
Four-speed manual gearbox
Mechanically sound, reportedly starts fine, idles well, and revs freely
There is a new fuel tank sender included as one fitted is not reading correctly
The vendor comments that the Beetle is well-suited for local running and handles motorway driving fine
