The appeal

The Renault Dauphine succeeded the much-loved 4CV as Renault’s rear-engined family saloon, and this 1956 example belongs to the very first production run, being among the first cars to roll off the production line. With its 845 cm³ engine paired with a three-speed manual gearbox, the Dauphine offered an extra level of refinement and space compared to its predecessor. Today, these early Dauphines are increasingly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of French cars.

Finished in Bleu Régate and featuring a grey and blue interior, this Dauphine is largely in its original condition, enhanced by a charming period patina. The condition of its underbody and its factory markings suggest that this is a particularly authentic example. The seller states that the engine runs well and that the three-speed gearbox is a pleasure to use.

An inspection report is provided, although certain issues noted – particularly regarding the brakes and steering – require repair before the car can be used on the road. Supplied with two new wheel rims and a new speedometer cable, this first-series Dauphine presents an appealing project, whether you wish to preserve it in its current condition or undertake a respectful restoration.

The seller describes the bodywork as in very good condition, with well-aligned doors and a period patina.
There are a few paint chips, light scratches, minor signs of surface corrosion and signs of wear consistent with the vehicle’s age.
Impact damage to the rear right wing.
The rear seat has a tear; there may be some mould and a few signs of wear and tear due to age.
The headlining is stained, with a few spots of corrosion along its edges.
The interior is described as sound and clean, requiring only partial cosmetic refurbishment.
