The Appeal
Manhurin made its name making guns, but in the post-war years, there was less call for those, so it turned to something altogether more upbeat, namely building DKW scooters under licence. The firm’s Hobby was launched in 1956 and reworked the style of the DKW, added different wheels and a pillion and was a huge success.
The scooter was aimed at beginners, who valued its clever ‘Beltomatic’ automatic gearbox, which uses a centrifugal clutch with belt-drive pulley systems to take the effort out of gear changers. They were well built too, featuring an early use of electrostatic powder coating for the paintwork. That may explain why this pretty cream 1959 Hobby remains in such good order. It is a really tidy example, the cream paint complemented by a smart two-seat saddle. There are also some period decals to dial up the nostalgia.
These scooters are now very collectable. This one carries German papers and looks like a great addition to any collection.
