The Appeal
The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic cars ever built, and the 1200 Deluxe of 1960 brought subtle but important refinements, including the larger 1200cc flat-four engine, square rear window, and upgraded trim. Beloved worldwide for its charm and engineering, the Beetle’s enduring appeal lies in its originality and unmistakable design.
This example is truly special: a 1960 Beetle 1200 Deluxe in Flint Grey with Ice Blue interior, which was subject to an extensive restoration by its third keeper and celebrated in an eight-page Volksworld feature in August 2017. Its condition today is near-concours, with both the exterior and interior presenting to an extraordinarily high standard, complemented by original semaphore indicators, American-spec bumpers, and steel wheels with interior colour-matched centres and chrome hubcaps.
So how does such a car survive in this enviable condition, with so few miles under its belt? Well, the story goes that after four years, the original owner sadly passed away. His widow returned the car to Stratsones, the supplying dealer, who somehow managed to lose the car in storage. It was discovered some fifty years later in remarkable condition and restored to a superlative standard. With such a good starting point, the Beetle now presents as an exemplary specimen.

Mechanically, the car is equally impressive, with its 1172cc flat-four engine and Solex 28 PICT-1 carburettor said to have been fully refurbished and spotless throughout. With just four former keepers and around seven years in the hands of its current owner, this MOT- and tax-exempt Beetle represents a rare chance to acquire a fully restored, factory-correct example of one of the most celebrated classics of all time.
