The Land Rover is a British icon and the Series 2a is probably one of the most recognisable of the lot. Produced between 1961-71 the Series 2a was fast becoming one of the more successful of the land rover dynasty. Between 1969 and 1970 Land Rover production peaked at 60,000 units. Most of these were exported and Land Rover dominated many overseas 4x4 markets.

In today's world of hi-tech computer-driven automobiles, people have started to appreciate the relative simplicity of classic Land Rovers. In comparison to their modern counterparts, you can fix a Series Land Rover with a basic toolkit.

 These tough off-roaders have become a bit of a collectors dream and with prices seemingly always on the up, it is a car that will ask for little but give you a lot.

It is difficult to build a detailed picture of the trucks life all the way back to when it left the Solihull factory in 1964. However, it is said that it was used as a farm truck for the majority of its life.

The current owner picked this car up from an eccentric character in the Cambridge area, who would use this IIa as their daily commuter for the 60 odd mile trek into London and back, a testament to its reliability and useability. 

All of the work that has been done to this Series IIa in the past few years has been done by this previous owner and his mechanically minded father. As you will find out, they have been through this truck meticulously to make sure that it is about as straight as it can be.

The current owner picked it up from Cambridge and drove it straight back down the motorway to their house with absolutely no issues, which included a stint on the M25. Within their ownership, this vehicle has been thoroughly enjoyed with a healthy amount of exploring done along the country roads in Sussex.  

This Series IIa has been well looked after over the past 50 years with all of the previous owners enjoying the unique charm which the Series Land Rover has in buckets.

There is unfortunately not much paperwork due to a farmer who was a previous owner had lost the paperwork. However, what the new owner will acquire with the car is not only the V5 but a historic Haynes manual that has some notes in the back which outline some of the modern electric works that have been carried out by some of the previous owners. There is no reason to doubt that the vehicle has been maintained well however.

With this being a proper and classic Land Rover the interior is both iconic and simple. With only a few vital dials and two seats, what more could you need for a tough, working off-roader? Although the original dials are still set into the dash , the amperes dial is non-functioning at present as the original dynamo has been replaced for a better and more modern alternator set up which provides a more reliable electrical output.

A few small areas to note within the interior include, the dials which may need to be re-sealed to stop fogging, the rubber push on door seals may need to be replaced and the seals around where the top of the windscreen meets the roof may need replacing to prevent water ingress. However, these are all minor issues which can easily be rectified.

Alongside the original dials in the middle of the dash, there are also a few modern fixtures that has been updated to work with modern wiring. Two of the switches operate the windscreen wipers and sprayers, one operates the interior light, and another will operate the glow plugs for the diesel power plant.

The new owner will need to be aware that the choke has now been turned into the engine kill switch.

With all the additions to the interior covered it may be important to mention that the factory fitted seats, steering wheel and more importantly the modern 3-point seat belts are in great condition. All of these features work as well as the day it left the factory.

A final point to note is that the structural parts of the interior such as the floors, doors and bulkhead are all in great condition, showing no signs of rust or damage.

Overall the interior of this Series IIa is just a simple and honest place to sit and enjoy whilst the miles roll by.

The simple exterior lines of a Series Land Rover are now iconic with the design language of the Series being carried right into the 21st century with the help of its older brother, the Defender. The exterior of this Series IIa is in what is classed as an ‘honest’ condition. It is not show quality but for a truck that has spent the majority of its life as a working vehicle, it is in good condition.

There aren’t any signs of bubbling paint on the exterior and only a few places where the paint may need a little attention, but all of the little imperfections add to the story and patina of the truck.

At present the truck sits as a pick-up variant with a canvas bed cover, but this truck also comes with the 88” metal hardtop/cage and has the metal framework for attaching a canvas hood as well. All of these extra pieces are also in good condition with little to no signs of wear. Not only are they in good condition but owing to the unique sizing of the 88” wheelbase these extra items are hard to come across.

Due to the simplistic and almost modular nature of the Series Land Rovers, any issues on the exterior are usually easy and quick to rectify, even a novice would be able to spend an afternoon and accomplish a lot.

When this Series IIa left the Solihull plant back in 1964 it would have been originally fitted with the Inline-4 petrol engine, however, a popular modification at the time was to swap the petrol inline 4 for the diesel unit instead which is exactly what has happened to this Series IIa.

The diesel engine provides better fuel economy and torquier set up which is what you need with an off-roader. With the new diesel engine fitted there is now a different starting procedure which is pretty easy to master. If you want to push the boat out it will also come with a starting handle.

In the hands of the previous owners, there has been some pretty extensive work carried out on the structural components, mechanical components, and electronic systems. The new owner will benefit from a more modern alternator, a bigger battery, a refreshed starter/ignition button and motor, a new electronic heater and fan, four new tires with around 150 miles on them, a working indicator stalk and a horn.

It is also worth noting that although the Odometer displays 10430 miles, the true reading is in fact 110430 miles as the clock has completed one rotation.
 
One key place to look at when thinking of purchasing a classic car is the chassis, Land Rovers are especially known for having issues with this vital structural part. However, there is no such worry with the chassis of this Series IIa. It has recently gone through a proper, body-off, chassis overhaul with a photo gallery to prove this.

With all the mechanical work that has gone into this truck over the past few years, it is in great mechanical condition and is ready for the new owner to enjoy.
