1976 Suzuki GT250 ‘Café Racer’

Highlights

 • Full restored in early 2017
 • Newly presented in striking Double Six Racing livery
 • Ultra-low mileage, just two former keepers
 • A superb example of the ‘café racer’ genre

The Appeal

At the core of the British motorcycling world during the latter part of the last century, a café racer is a genre of sport-oriented motorcycles that originated among motorcycle enthusiasts of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Meets of the ‘Ton-Up Boys’ were regularly held at the iconic Ace Café on the North Circular Road, London, which to this day remains a hugely popular hangout for rockers, bikers and petrolheads of all generations.
Café racers were essentially standard production bikes that were modified by their owners and optimised for speed and handling for sprint rides over short distances. Such fun!
The first of the GT250 models was introduced to the Japanese home market in 1971 and apart from some cosmetic changes was identical to the T250 that preceded it. It proved immensely popular and improvements came thick and fast as feedback was received. The GT’s ram air system and disc frame brake were added in 1972 and a year later the model was introduced to export markets.
The popularity of genuinely historic motorcycles is increasing year-on-year and now is the time to bag an iconic, two-wheeled bargain just in time for summer.

The History and Paperwork

 • Fully restored in 2017 personally by the vendor.
 • Dry-stored, dry-ridden.
 • V5 certificate in current keeper’s name.
This very tidy Suzuki GT250 was totally and sympathetically restored during 2017, at which time it was dressed in the striking Double Six Racing livery it wears today.
This café racer received its first UK registration in August 1976. With just two former keepers, its third and current custodian acquired the bike in late November, 2016. In addition, a donor bike was acquired and the restoration project commenced in earnest, with around £10,000 invested in the project. Since completion, the bike has been enjoyed sparingly and now records a mileage of just 1,575 on the odometer.
Accompanying the Suzuki will be the V5 Certificate in the current keeper’s name, a small file of relevant paperwork of servicing, parts and documents pertaining to provenance, along with a few images taken prior to its restoration (as reproduced in the gallery below).

The Condition

 • In truly remarkable condition.
 • Smartly presented in Double Six Racing livery.
 • Tidy and unblemished exterior.
This mid-70s Suzuki GT250 is in exemplary condition all-round. The striking Double Six Racing livery offers an eye-catching colour scheme.
Having been ridden a paltry 1,575 miles since its thoroughly professional restoration over five years ago, the paintwork and D6R decals are in excellent condition, as are the handle bar grips and red quilted-leather seat.
Some of the fittings for the rebuild were either salvaged from the original or the donor bike, such as the chromed light holders show not a hint of age-related patina and look very sharp indeed. A pair of brand new Continental ‘ContiGo!’ tyres clad the period-spoked road wheels and the Higgspeed stainless steel exhaust pipes set off the overall aesthetic.
Hop onto the smart red quilted leather seat with its white piping. Suddenly, you’re transported back to the mid 1970’s and if The Wurzels were to wax lyrical in your ear about their ‘brand new combine harvester’, our understanding would be instant!

The Mechanics

 • Rarely ridden since 2017.
 • Said to be in truly excellent mechanical condition.
 • No quarter spared in its upkeep.
At the photo location, the Suzuki GT250 was not fired up, but that’s not because it didn’t want to.
We are assured by the current keeper that this smart GT250 is in fine mechanical condition with its brakes, engine, gearbox, clutch and running gear performing as well as their respective Japanese engineers intended nearly fifty years ago.
Its showroom condition is a testament to the love and care afforded the bike while under the stewardship of the present keeper. No expense has been spared in maintaining the bike – if it’s been needed, it’s been done without hesitation.
