The Appeal
The 420SL is a lovely bit of kit, but if you want some extra urge and the burble of a V8 as you trundle around Cotswold lanes or cruise across continental, then you want to seek out this car, one of the 2,148 420SLs built.
With a healthy 220bhp emanating from its M116 motor, enthusiasts value these cars not just for their rarity, but because they a good balance between the six cylinder and larger, thirstier eight cylinder cars. This one adds to its appeal by being finished in the unusual Anthracite Grey, an understated finish that suits the R107’s lines and works well with its extensive chromework. It has the added benefit of being an early example with the desirable galvanised chassis.
This car is in good general condition and would work well as a daily or there is scope to improve. It has clearly been looked after as the history file shows over £40,000 of receipts amassed by its handful of keepers.
Supplied with its matching hard top, a rear seat conversion and some useful spares, this R107 rarity just needs a little TLC and a fresh MOT to hit the road.
