THE APPEAL
The Range Rover Classic is the original and best, so it’s no surprise to find that good ones are highly prized collectors’ cars these days. Later examples have a different appeal, too, as they’re also the models that transformed the Range Rover’s reputation, taking it from a more car-like alternative to a Land Rover to becoming a desirable luxury object.
It was in 1984 when the Range Rover really started moving up in the world as an automatic gearbox and leather upholstery became available. A 1986 facelift introduced a plastic grille with pedestrian safety in mind and an optional valance with twin fog lights, along with many other subtle improvements. And it’s one of those that we have here – a Vogue, which was the luxury-oriented trim.
This, for some, might just be the perfect Range Rover Classic. In rare-as-hen’s-teeth manual transmission specification and finished in unusual but desirable Cassis Red, the Range Rover is a really smart and usable Eighties classis – but it’s the provenance behind this one that really stands out.
Supplied new by Wadham Stringer’s of Guildford in July 1987, the car has had just one previous owner who cherished and maintained it to a very high standard right up until he passed away in 2004. It remained in dry storage for the next 19 years before being acquired by the vendor from a deceased estate. It has been registered in his name as the executor’s couldn’t locate the V5, but it is essentially a one-owner car.
This is a really special example of a Range Rover Classic – it’s structurally excellent and is cosmetically superb with a great interior, and those alone are reasons to buy it.
But there’s a bigger and even more significant appeal in its rare specification and its amazing provenance. As a manual it has an appeal of its own, but with just one owner and a fully documented history it’s something else. You’ll struggle to find another Eighties Range Rover that’s anything like it.
