The Austin Metro was British Leyland's answer to the ever-strong demand for a diminutive, inexpensive supermini. This bare bones, highly evocative package was designed as the spiritual successor to the iconic Mini, and while it's undeniably less twee and anachronistic, it certainly carries the spirit.
These cars reached everyone in one way or another. For over 18 years, they were one of the most iconic and undeniably British motors on the roads, and as they never managed to replace the Mini - rather, co-exist with it - they never came under any ire. They were austere, cheap and cheerful, and didn't carry any of the silly pretentions of their European cousins. A real peoples' car!
