The Appeal
In the 1980s, triggered by the Audi Quattro, car makers were scrabbling to launch 4x4 variants of their everyday models. The Mk3 Granada was built as Ford’s technological tour de force, a very modern halo car, and this car, the all wheel drive variant, was designed to keep Mercedes, Audi and BMW out of the specially allocated executive car parking places.
The 4x4 features an epicyclic centre differential that splits drive 34% to the front and 66% to the rear, giving drivers the rear bias typical of a classic Ford, but with the surefootedness of those Audi rally raiders. These were expensive cars and sold in tiny numbers, making them exceptionally rare today. The manual gearbox version, as here, is a virtual curate’s egg. Records indicate just one 4x4 Ghia is currently UK road-registered.
As you can see in the photos, it is in extremely good condition. It has ‘show star’ written all over it. The light grey paintwork and matching blue/grey interior look barely used, the underside likewise. Aside from the smart BBS split rims, it appears largely standard, right down to the factory audio system. We spotted a coupe of extremely minor cosmetic points in the photos, but nothing of great concern.
The car was last MOTd in August 2024, so will need to be retested before hitting the road. The last test had no advisories. Once done you get a very practical, comfortable classic that is rarer than most exotica.
