THE APPEAL

It’s now over 30 years since the ‘R129’ generation of Mercedes-Benz SL made its debut – heralded as a car that brought new levels of technology and luxury to the sports car market, not to mention soft-top safety thanks to its innovative pop-up rollover hoop. The seats also included several safety innovations including built in seat belt tensioners and side impact protection.

The styling was amazing – designed by Mercedes visionary Bruno Sacco, it bookended a career that had begun with the equally handsome W114 saloon and it still looks magnificent today. Yet it had plenty more going for it than just looks.

This example is one of the last pre-facelift models – an SL 300 in rare Pearl Grey Metallic. It’s a handsome car, with a sensible 112,000 miles on the clock and lots of historical paperwork, along with a hugely desirable factory hardtop.
