On sale for almost two decades, the Volvo 240 was widely admired and respected, if rarely celebrated at the time. Yet today, this venerable old warhorse resembles a paragon of solidity and simplicity in an era of mandatory electronics and intrusive safety aids. Estate 240s have load-carrying capabilities few modern vehicles can match, with rock-solid construction and tough mechanicals harking back to a simpler and easier age.

The current owner has had this vehicle since 2018, servicing it regularly and installing replacement parts as required. With classic pinstripes, the silver paintwork is in reasonable condition, retaining its original Tørslanda badges and lattice alloy wheels. Internally, period features include the original toolkit, blue cloth seats and matching carpets, with exposed speakers and rocker switches reflecting this car’s Seventies origins.
 
The owner reports some pitting across the bonnet and roof, while there are scuffs down the lower passenger side; the passenger mirror also needs replacing. Prior works have encompassed the rear trailing arms, distributor caps and anti-roll bar bushings, washer pumps and distributor caps. A future custodian will also want to repair a bonnet release cable and passenger door insert, as well as addressing a broken radio cassette player.
 
On the move, this Volvo remains eminently practical, with the engine apparently firing well and all gears engaging cleanly. A smooth ride is reported, with the car having covered roughly two thousand motorway miles per year under its current stewardship. The owner describes this as “a no-nonsense Volvo 240” which has been only lightly used. As such, it promises many more years of faithful service, in the time-honoured Volvo fashion.
