The Appeal
The late 90s were the swansong of the greatest era in BTCC racing, a time when the track cars looked identical to the rep rockets that Britain’s salespeople ploughed up and down motorways. It was an era dominated by Ford’s slippery Mondeo. Prepared by Prodrive and piloted by Alain Menu, Anthony Reid and Rickard Rydell, the 2L V6Rapid Fit Mondy snatched the Driver’s, Manufacturers and Touring Teams Championships in 2000, the final year of the Super Touring era.
To celebrate its success and help parlay it into showroom sales, Ford created this BTCC simulator and featured it at the Millennium Dome exhibition. It is believed to be based on a replica of the test car used during the 1999 season. It retains its bodywork and interior from its road-going days and is still fitted with Ford and Prodrive parts that would have featured on the track-going version. It is equipped with the original PS1 system and TOCA: Touring Cars game.
As a display piece, a conversation starter, or indeed a functioning — if somewhat oversized — gaming rig, this is a notable artefact from a much-loved era of touring car racing.
