The Appeal

In many ways, the Volvo V70 Cross Country (or XC70 as it later became known) was a precursor to the cars of today – its jacked-up ride height and plastic body cladding giving it a quasi-off-roader appeal that fitted in neatly with Middle England’s suburbs.

But the Volvo was somehow classier and more upmarket than today’s mid-range SUVs. Indeed, this one was a very expensive car when new, tipping the scales at just under £40,000 in 2001. A direct rival to the Audi A6 Allroad, the Volvo V70 XC was a classy, high-quality car – and it still is.

This one is the pick of the range – a 2001 2.4 Turbo S, it has a 200PS turbocharged five-cylinder engine that makes a wonderful noise, allied to an adaptive ‘Geartronic’ transmission with a sequential manual shift option.

The vendor bought the car three years ago and used it as his daily transport for 12 months, but then took the car to his holiday home in the Scottish Highlands where it was stored in a dehumidified car storage centre when not in use. As a result, it has only seen very light use in the past two years. It comes with a long MOT valid until April 2025 and is in lovely order throughout – a quirky, useful and interesting modern classic wagon, with loads of power and a lovely engine.
