The Appeal

The R230 SL55 AMG sat at the very top of Mercedes-Benz's grand touring roadster range. Its hand-built, supercharged 5.5-litre V8 produced 493 HP, enough to rival dedicated sports cars of the era, while the electrohydraulic retractable hardtop and well-appointed cabin kept the SL's reputation for effortless luxury firmly intact. Originally retailing at $137,320, it was a serious machine with a price tag to match.
