The Appeal
It’s hard to believe now, looking at its handsome, understated lines, but Mercedes’ ‘Ponton’ shocked, yes shocked, contemporary buyers. Its full body style was so different to what went before, and so cutting edge for Mercedes’ conservative buyers, that it took a while for them to adapt.
Adapt they did, because the Ponton was beautifully engineered and combined quality, practicality and everyday luxury in a way few rivals could manage. You can tell how well built these cars are from this one, which remains in good, highly usable order despite being 70 years old. With its economical and highly reliable 1.9L OM621 diesel engine, it would even work as a daily driver.
This 1955 car is presented in two-tone blue with a beige vinyl interior that retains its beautiful veneer dashboard. The bodywork presents well and the interior is very usable. There is scope to take it to the next level, or get in and enjoy it on your commute.
