The Appeal
The R107 of 1971 did the job of long distance drop top tourer so well that Mercedes kept it in production, virtually unchanged, for 18 years. Solid, superbly engineered and very comfortable, many car companies tried to emulate its combination of charms but few succeeded.
The 380SL came with the firm’s superb M116 V8 engine, which added more power and extra smoothness to the already unruffled SL experience. This 1982 example attractively combines white bodywork with a blue leather interior and blue fabric roof and has covered less than 80,000 miles in its 41 years. Few classic cars are as useable and rewarding as the R107 Mercedes, so much so that many owners still use them as daily drivers. The wide variety of engine and trim combinations mean that there is also a SL for virtually everyone.
