The Background
The XJ40 appeared in 1986 as the successor to the long-standing XJ Series III. A fairly major facelift came in 1992 to coincide with Ford’s acquisition of Jaguar. Jaguar purists consider the post-’92 cars as better built as a result of the ownership change.
The XJ40 was considered high-tech for the times and certainly by comparison to its predecessor. Early examples even had an all-electronic instrument panel which was later dropped in favour of more conventional dials.
During its life the XJ40 came with a range of engines from 2.9L sixes, right through to a 6L V12. The 4L straight six as presented here is considered a great compromise by many providing a good performance to economy quotient.FxwvU2S65SigO1wcdNABtoPiNNV2eoD1erNMnqcP.jpeg1.63 MB
The History
This example of the breed was built in 1993 and, as such, is from the well-respected Ford period. The car was originally supplied via Frosts Jaguar in East Sussex and enjoyed its first three services there too.
Subsequently the car has been well cared for by a total of nine owners and the fastidious maintenance regime was clearly upheld by them all. The current owner has very much enjoyed his time with the car commenting on the “special occasion” ambiance of the car. Work commitments and other projects now means he is looking for the next enthusiastic owner for the car.
The Daimler versions of the XJ40 were the best specified and most luxurious models in the range. There were a number of differences over the humbler Jaguar XJ40’s. Internally these included the wood veneered fold-out picnic tables and the luxurious individual rear seats as opposed to the three-person bench seats in other versions.
You will see from our photographic package the interior of this car is in great original condition. Bothe the cream leather and the extensively used dark wood veneer present in excellent condition throughout.
The exterior continues to impress in the way that the interior does. The Kingfisher Blue paintwork suits the elegance of the car very well and is in good, mostly original condition. The paintwork is mainly admirably thick and provides a deep, lustrous shine.
As you will see from the paperwork package, the current owner has had some bodywork undertaken and this appears to have been undertaken to a good, professional standard. Given this car is a regularly used, 29-year-old car there are marks and imperfections here and there but the overall impression is one of a good and honest used condition.
The 15-inch Daimler alloy wheels are in a good overall condition with some minor bubbling and lacquer deterioration evident on close inspection. The period correct 215/65 ratio tyres are fitted to help maintain the legendary ride quality and the correct look and ride-height.
This car is fitted with the well respected 4L AJ6 engine which is a 24-valve, DOHC unit with a 3,980cc displacement. The engine was originally rated at an impressive 245bhp and 289 Ib-ft of torque. Many consider this engine as giving a great blend of power and economy.
As you will see from the paperwork package, this car has been well maintained throughout its life and, as such, the owner reports that all mechanical systems are in good, used condition and working as expected.
This Daimler 4.0 Auto was definitely the preserve of the Chairman of the Board back in 1993. It is easy to imagine captains of industry being whisked from meeting to meeting in the luxurious rear cabin of this car. Its interior is no less luxurious and opulent today and presents in great used condition.
Additionally, this is an eminently useable classic saloon. It has been well maintained and is ready to transport its lucky new owner to car shows, events and occasions in refined comfort.
