If you own a classic roadster, you'll know how cumbersome and impractical some hardtops are. Usually one-piece affairs that are difficult to store and heavy to fit/remove, while they provide all-weather ability, they also have significant drawbacks. Triumph’s solution to the problem for their new TR4 in 1961 was this innovative proto-targa setup.
This offers a glass rear window in a body-coloured metal frame and a choice of interchangeable solid metal or folding fabric roof panels. Triumph called the latter a “Surrey Top”, a name which has since colloquially been applied to the entire roof setup. As a two-piece item, it's easier to store, fit and remove. It also provides a much more flexible solution over a single-piece hardtop. The roof panel can be removed separately and stowed in the boot, effectively giving you three options: full hardtop, targa and roadster (if you unbolt the rear window section).
This example is presented in unrestored, solid and usable condition and is finished in red paintwork. Only the rear window section and hardtop panel are included.
